Seems awful early to rattle and call...maybe a grunt if a buck was walking away from you. No wonder they were spooked

Don't know where he is or how vocal or loud he got with his grunting and his antler rattling but some people tend to over do it, more is very seldom better especially early in the season.

Brow Tine is correct that velvet hasn't been shed in some areas for very long so there's probably a lot more rubbing on brush and tree's going on than sparring, I would agree its definitely way early to be making a lot of heavy fight noise with antlers so if I used antlers at all right now it would just be tickling them together enough that he should hear it.

A person needs to keep in mind that deer are just like people in some ways also, some bucks are very agressive and they puff their chest out and think they are all that and those bucks are more likely to come in to rattling to either join in or out of curiousity and then there are other bucks that are kind of sheepish or timid acting and some will slink away or ignore the sounds of a fight. Its also possible the buck got his tail kicked earlier in the day in that area by another buck and he didn't want any more of it.

Close to or during the breeding part of the rut would probably be the only time I would simulate a big fight because when does are being chased and bred is when the sparring matches of earlier meetings between bucks can turn into some knock down drag out fights.

tonights update... i got out there about 5pm it was drizzling... then kept getting stronger and sttronger till it was pouring... the rain finally let off and became a mist... i hit the young buck grunt 3 times and waited a few minutes and done it again a little bit later i seen a weed moving and i watched it for a bit and it stopped. i waited about 15 minutes and done the same grunt sequence only 4 times... about 2 minutes later it smelled like someone opened a bottle of tinks in front of me i started looking side to side and around me... well guess what... that 8 pointer i had missed was standing 30 yards in front of me upwind.. i seen him for about 5 seconds he seen me moving my head trying to figure out what the smell was. and turned and bolted. btw im hunting on the ground since i cant afford a tree stand and someone stole my tree lounge a few years ago... seems like i have a pretty good hunting area... i have seen a deer every day i have been hunting. :) also... about 15 minutes after he left i heard a couple weezes down wind of me... which suprised me because i didnt think any deer would be on that side of me...

Cool, you in the Marion/Hillsboro area? I've fished that reservior a bunch of times over past years.

If you are in a natural blind of tree limbs, etc and you don't already have some it sounds like maybe you need some camo netting draped around your blind so that only your head is visible.

Also try moving your eyes and not your head as much when looking around, I know it can be hard to resist temptation to move your head but at ground level any movement a deer see's is going to be a killer.

yup about 9 miles north of hillsboro... both bucks i have seen are VERY nice shooter deer in my opinion... that 8 point will be on my wall this year even if i have to wait till rifle season and blast him... which is a shame. i just hope i get a good shot with my bow... i hate that i have been bow hunting since i was 15 and now 21 and STILL havent killed a deer.

So I take it you've killed deer during rifle season then?

Maybe put some 'C'mere Deer' or other attractant on the ground on the oposite side of a tree from your blind, when they are eating the bait and their head is blocked by the tree then you can draw your bow.

Got any questions or anything, i'll do what I can bud.

yeah i have killed plenty of deer with a rifle... mule deer and whitetail missouri kansas and idaho elk in idaho and pronghorns in wyoming. only thing ever killed with a bow were 3d targets and one squirrel. im going to leave the food plot alone tomorrow and hunt a thicket a little bit south and try to catch him by his bedding area... i think i know where it is. about 50 yards south of the food plot in the edge of the trees. or under the one tree in the edge of the food plot where it joins the tall weeds. which would you pick? i have seen him in that area 4 days in a row now

also hunting in the rain isnt that bad... i sat for 2 hours in it today lol just waiting to see a deer for 5 seconds

I would suggest that you not hunt close to a bedding area that you know deer use regularly, once deer know that area has been invaded they will bed elsewhere and may even move out of an area for a period of time.

I would hunt a trail that shows a lot of evidence of use that connects between food or water and the bedding area.

Just wondering, are you hunting from a blind or just sitting on the ground?

I wasn't sure either, I advised him to get some camo netting to put around him if he wasn't conceiled very well.

Man that sucks, but thats public land for you. Last year i was turkey hunting, and i don't know if you guys have heard of our Alabama Gobblers, but if you can't get those suckers to gobble early you might as well quit trying at 9 am. All week i had be hunting the Chocolocco managment area till lunch unsuccessfully. I couldn't find any birds for nothing. I was owl hooting, crow callin, and cuttin like hell. At the end of the week i was hunting about lunch, just about ready to all it quits for the day. I had walked three miles calling here and there, and i finally got a gobble.(I normally run and gun). So i crept up this hill cutting hard enough to make any big tom horny as all get out. The whole time im creeping im getting a gobble hear in there. I come up on this holler and sit down. By the way it sounded this gobbler had to be in this holler. After sitting there for a few minutes i couldn't see the turkey, but i could hear him. Next thing i know this feller in a 3d suit stands up waving a Gobble tube and yells "I think were hunting the same bird."
After having no luck all week, and then getting all excited just to get my spirit stumped on by another hunter ruined my whole day.

Anyways if i was you,I'd take a day to just scout out another good spot, and make yourself a blind out of some sticks and brush. That or make sure you beat this other feller to the spot.

Oh. I had assumed he beat u there because you said he stole the antlers you left. But yea...... can be pretty frustrating. If managed well you can find some spots that look like gold; however, your probably not the only one who sees that golden opportunity. It makes me sick when your sitting there enjoying your hunt just waiting on the right deer to come by, then hear and noise and you turn expecting to see a deer, but here comes some feller decked out in blaze orange waddling through the woods. If it weren't for confrontations with other hunters, i wouldn't mind management areas at all.

If you are hunting WIHA (Walk in Hunting Land) that might be the land owner that you are hearing, even though they allow hunters to use their land they still have the right to come in and check cattle but if he is being obnoctious driving on the land daily making it impossible to hunt you need to tell the fish and game and they will take him off the program and not pay him.

They only want land owners that will allow people to use the land and not a farmer or rancher that just wants the govt money.

I would also ask that guy for your antlers back, explain you left them hanging in the tree to help you find your spot you have been hunting, explain you figured he has them because you and he are the only two you've seen hunting there. See if he fesses up to taking them.

Just remember to do it in a nice way. People can get very defensive if you are accusing them of taking things. Just a thought.

Yep, good point. Would be best to ask him if he saw or found a set of rattling antlers instead of asking if he took them.

Well deer season isn't even in yet, but i did see some deer today. While walking my dog on a farm, we spotted three bucks in a soy bean field. Me and my dog got down wind of them and crept around a bend till we were within 20 yards. I was pretty happy just sitting there watching them eat. There was one BIG 8 point another little 8 point with a dark chocolate rack, and a six point. I would have watched them till they left the field but..... you can only expect so much patients from your dog. She wouldn't sit any longer and started walking off behind me. In the process she snapped a twig and the gig was up. They spotted me and took off putting about 60 yards of distance between us. Once the stopped they just stood there studying me for about 5 minutes then eased into the woods. This particular farm is only a couple miles walk from my house, and I've asked the farmer if i could hunt it a couple years ago. He said no unfortunately, but at least he doesn't mind my walking.

Well there is that, I usually don't start deer hunting until about mid Oct here in southern Kansas because its usually too warm and as you found out a lot of bugs.

So hows everyone doing?

Postby StickThrower » Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:57 pm

I have been reading your posts tonite and wish you all luck. I am in the same boat as far as a first attempt on some things. I have been hunting for a while but I have just acquired my own piece of land to privately hunt. I went out after work to check my plots and stuff and walked to the end of my property to find someone in a box blind on my land. I knew the blind was there but it looked really old. I quickly walked back the other direction to try and not ruin his hunt any more as I already did but I did go to the house where he came from to talk to the land owner and he told me I could kick him off if I wanted but I am not cold like that. I gave the guy my phone number for the kid to call me when he gets out of the woods to talk to him about it. If he wants to be cool about it I may let him stay there but if he is difficult then he will find a scrap pile waiting. I am all about working together, I was planning to put a stand near that spot and figured if he wanted to chat about it then that was cool maybe we could arrange a new one or something. Anyhow I just put a cam out tonite to see whats wandering through and will let ya know how it goes, it should be good, I hope.

If i were you I would confront the person and make sure he knows hes on your land. I wouldn't want someone coming on my land and harvesting my deer without my permission while I'm the one doing all the work to build shooting houses, set up stands, and plant food plots.

I agree he needs to talk to the guy but for me it would depend on whether the blind is on the property boundary and if its facing into the other guys land where he has permission to hunt.

If the blind is on the edge of the property boundary line for conceilment in brush or weeds facing into a food plot or wheat field away from your land I would go lite on him.

Since its a young guy or kid I wouldn't sweat it much except to let the guy know to stay in that blind and that you also hunt so for him not to go walking through your land and ruin your hunt.

True he should have asked in advance but its possible he put the blind there under permission from the previous land owner, as you said the blind looked old like it had been there for a long time.

I dont think it will be such a big deal

Postby StickThrower » Tue Sep 29, 2009 7:52 pm

The landowners property that he came from seems like a nice guy. Im not one to come off as pain to work with but I do plan to let him know that we need to arrange something with the stand or something and that if we decide that we will keep the stand then he is gonna have to let me know when he goes there. The owner of the other land said I could hunt his land as well if I wished which is pretty cool because now my chunk has tripled in size....wooohooo!!

So take her with you. Teach her how to bowhunt. You get twice the tags, twice the meat and it's fun taking people who haven't hunted before.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.

...why is there a dishwasher in the woods? There's no kitchen out there... Yep, I said it. No but seriously, we need more female hunters in the woods - the more people involved the more we have fighting the cause for hunting and firearms. Plus, it's a great way to bond and who knows, maybe she won't want to hunt but that doesn't mean she can't video your hunts or share the experience with you. I wish my wife would give it a chance, but she likes sleep too much.

Anyway, the weather looks nice and cool with mild wind in my area for Saturday and Sunday, so I'll be hunting hard - best to get a buck early before the dominant buck scares the others away. I plan on posting pictures of either mine or my friend's deer (I have to think positive). :)
