20 ga ?

Postby ncboy » Thu Oct 29, 2009 12:20 pm

I have an 11 yo boy who has a CD 20 ga pump. I would like for him to deer hunt this year and was wandering what to shoot as buckshot or slugs. I dont have any experience with either. I do know range will be a factor with buckshot mostly. Most shots are less than 60 YDS. I dont want to spend the money on another youth gun. The gun is smoothbore with front sight ony. Thanks.

I would go with slugs. Pick up a box of a few different kinds and shoot them all till you find the one that patterns the best at 50 yards and youll be all set. 20 gauge is a great gun for deer, Ive been shooting one for a long long time now and it has put many deer down.

If you want, you would be best off if you can get a slug barrel for the gun. Be it smooth bore or rifled, you get the rear sights, so it will be much more accurate.

Good Advice from NY.

The 20 gauge is a nice deer gun, just practice and know your range limit, regardless of what barrel you end up hunting with.

We look forward to seeing some pics of the deer you're gonna get.

Dedicated deer barrel will certainly help. Smoothbore barrels tend to shoot Foster style better ie: cheaper ones. Skip the premium and sabot slugs. Odds are neither will shoot worth a "hoot" out of it. One brand I recommend if your gun will shoot them accurately is Brenneke. 20 ga Short Field Magnums and K.O.'s are what our kids use in our club/group. Even if you skip the deer barrel a sighting device will help immensely.

Thanks, I went to one of our local gun shops and he said to get an IC choke and shoot a rifled slug. I will also purchase a set of true gloe sights. I think that should do the trick.

Dont just "skip the premium and sabot slugs". I shoot sabots out of mine and its a tack driver. You can also get controlled recoil rounds with sabots, so they work very well with kids.

Shootin sabots thru a smoothbore is a waste of money. If you've got a rifled barrel or rifled choke tube then you can try them. I shot sabots several years ago for 2 seasons and wasnt impressed, accuracy was good but on game they left alot to be desired. Mine run about .75 each so I can shoot alot of them thru out the year. The $2-$4 each slugs may be great but I dont care to use them as my shooting would be very limited. Buddy shoots the Hornady SST, I think hes paying around $18/box(5). When we go shooting I burn 5 box's at least sometimes 10. At $4ish a box to me theres no comparison he burns 5 box's and he's out $90ish dollars.

Nobody said that you should shoot sabots through a smooth bore. A rfiled choke tube is a waste, doesnt spin the sabot long enough. You need a fully rifled barrel to shoot them. The consistency of the sabots at longer range is what you are going for. When I sued to shoot smooth bore with regular slugs, I was fine out to 60 maybe 70 yards, but with the rifled barrel and sabots, I am perfectly comfortable with 100 to 125 yard shots. I do use a scope though. Yes, sabots are a bit on the expensive side, but I dont need more than a box or two to make completely sure that my gun is still sighted in properly, so I dont worry about costs.

Thought he said he had a smoothbore? I prefer to shoot my deer guns all year so I prefer the medium priced slugs(50-100 a year before season). My combo shoots as well as any Ive been around. Certain rifled tubes will shoot sabots good. One of our deer camp members 12 year old son has a older Remington 1100 20ga with the rem.choke. He has a screw in rifled tube and it shoots several brands of sabots decently and Lightfields as good as any centerfire rifle out to 100 yards + a few extra. Some of the brands of screw in rifled tubes may not shoot sabots good but his has impressed me. Scoped fully rifled barrel is best but some may not prefer to dedicate a weapon to shotgun deer hunting or cant afford that kind of setup.
