204 BRASS WANTED !!!!!!

Postby vstarchopper » Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:32 am

I am an avid reloader and I am looking to purchase some new or once fired 204 brass. I would prefer Hornady brass, but I'll take what I can get.

I have lots of brass but im not looking to get rid of it.However i am interested in what loads you are having luck with.I havent gotten the dies for my 204 yet but do intend on playing with the loads.I have been doing alot of remodeling lately so the reloading room got put on the back burner but its getting close to being set up again.

I've shot a ton of different loads out of my gun. The 40 grain bullets don't seem to group as tight at the 32's. I have tried H4895, H322 and Benchmark powders. The benchmark powder shoots the best for me. I am shooting under 1/2" at 100 yards using the load listed below. I have even shot as tight as 0.3" with a 5 shot group.

My rifle is a Remington 700 VLS heavy barrel 1 in 12 twist. I have the trigger set at 2.5 pounds. I am using a weaver K24 target scope.

My father has a Ruger #1 in 204 and his rifle shoots under 1/2" with the same load.

27 grains of Benchmark powder with a 32 Grain Hornady Vmax bullet. CCI 450 magnum primer. OAL 2.30

I have only shot the v-max factory loads so far.like you my gun tends to like the 32 grain bullets better. My gun dosent shoot as well as i think it should though.Im not a big fan of savage but i let the guy in the gun shop talk me into it even though it never even crossed my mind to buy one before the day that i did.Its a savage model twelve with a bull barrel and accu-trigger.Topped with a 6.5-20 leupold.I find it to vari. When its freshly cleaned it holdsabout a 2 inch group at 100 yds between 7-10 shots it will hold around a 1-1 1/2 inch group.After10-12 shots it has to be cleaned cause even though it will still kill ground hogs it will just frustrate you at the shooting bench.I grew up shooting 22-250s and 220 swifts so i expect any varmint rifle to pretty much shoot hole for hole at 100 yds.Until i get set up and play with the loads a little im left with the question is it the gun or the ammo.

When I first shot my Remington 700, I was shooting 2" groups too. I was really disappointed. But after I shot a few hundred rounds and got the barrel broke in, I started shooting tighter groups. I'm down to under 1/2" groups. My dad's 22-250 shoots incredibly tight (about 1/4" groups), but its a true bench rest gun.

My brother is a Savage guy. He has about 4 of them. They are all tack drivers. He also has a couple Rem 700's but he says that Savages are just as good, just cheaper. He also likes the fact that the average guy can change out a barrel on a Savage. He likes the old Savage actions and then installs the new Accutriggers.

A very good friend of mine has the same rifle you have Tony. He reloads for it and is getting 5 shot groups that you can cover with a dime at 100yds. I will see if I can get his load and post it.
