.22 Squirrel Hunting/Which gun to choose?

Postby deadeyealex » Tue Sep 15, 2009 7:20 pm

I'm a big squirrel hunter, I have a .22 but i have grown out of it. What should be my next weapon of choice? I want something cool and bigger than the last. (Cricket) Any suggestions? Thank you :)

.22 is probably the perfect squirrel caliber.

Maybe make it toughter by going from a rifle to a single shot long barrel .22 pistol, another option to consider is to get away from guns and try hunting squirrels with a bow.

I grew up hunting squirrel with a .410 but a .22 is really the best for hunting squirrel, you just can't beat it.

Actually the best gun for squirrel hunting would be one of the adult size air guns. Quiet, plenty of power for small game and not a ridiculous range.

Plus air rifles are just plain fun to shoot and cheap. You could try 22 shorts they are devistaiting to squirrels.

The new air rifles are the ticket. But if you dont want to go that route i would say any adult size .22,.22 mag.or 17 hmr.

I agree completely. In my own opinion shotguns tend to take the challenge out of squirrel hunting, as well as the twenty two. Heck most the time i use my bow for squirrels.

That small game tip is DEADLY. I've cut a squirrel in half with that sucker, and turned brains to jello.

Oh yeah. On the outdoor channel i saw a man kill 2 javelinas with the Gamo Extreme Hunter .177 caliber pellet gun.

Get yourself a bolt action .22 or a single shot. Lots of semi autos out there, but they tend to help you develope bad shooting habits. JMHO

Depends alot on the action you want? Bolts and all manualy operated actions tend to run higher then the entry level semi autos. I bought a Savage semi auto last year and its a good shooter. Ruger 10/22's are on the high end of the production rifles but they are good.
