That's a toss up. Either one is a fantastic cartridge for deer no matter what state you're hunting.

What kwack said.Sometimes i wonder why they bother making so many calibers. When some of them are so close.I cant believe the arguing i will here over some of the diffrences in close calibers. One will be 60 fps faster and the other will have 10flbs more behind it. Big deal As long as your not using a 22 to kill a deer or a 45-70 to shoot squirells or something that drastic it probably wont make a diffrence.Shoot what you are comfortable with.

Either caliber will put a stomping on deer of all sizes, 150 grain bullets would be a good bullet weight to use.

I would go to the store where you buy ammo and see if they carry a variety of one caliber over the other and maybe let that help be your guide, having ammo localy available can mean a lot.

The trajectory and killing power are similar between the two out to 300-400yds depending on the ammo being used, there is a lot more variety in the .308 on bullet weights all the way up to 200grain for bear, moose and both have similar amounts of recoil with the same type of ammo.

I've killed deer with both, I had a .308 in an H&K91 and I currently have a .270 Browning Bar and I would be happy deer hunting with either caliber.

If i were you i would take the 270. win.
the 270. win is fast, flat, hits really hard. Now i use a 270. win on moose and caribou and it does it every time. Now whitetail are a lot smaller then a moose, and not nearly as tough. Load a 130 grain its really flat and fast, and will knock them whitetails down.

im in the middle of purchasing a deer rifle and i think im getting a 243. win. Im choosing this cause i don't hunt whitetail that often with a rifle due to where i live so then i can mount a good scope and use it for varmint, then when i do the occasional hunt for whitetail it will take it no problem.

Might make a difference in what rifle you choose 270 takes a long action 308 fits in a short action.

Just my thoughts but the 308 has more options in bullet weighs than the 270 .And if you what a long action the same reason to go with a30/06.

I'd go the .308.

The difference between the .06 and .308 with a 150 grain bullet is ratspit. The .270 with a 130 grain is a bit flatter, but if you go for hogs, I'd opt for a 180 grain roundnose. It WILL kill faster than a spitzer on average. If you go for a lot of hogs, you'd appreciate a 20" tube, roundnose bullet and short action.

If it's just the occasional hog hunt, it just doesn't matter.

PS - just saw your last reply - you'll love your .270. Pretty hard to make a bad choice with either.
