I shoot a .270 almost exclusively. Great gun, great ballitics, hard hitting and flat shooting. It ould be hard to ask for anything else in a deer rifle.

The .223 will kill a deer but good luck with a blood trail. You will have a hard time getting a .223 to leave an exit wound. Spend some money and buy a deer rifle with a little more punch.

270??

Postby Gator4ever » Tue Dec 05, 2006 11:42 pm

This call is all yours. The 270 is an awesome caliber. Depending on where you live, you may want to look at the 7mm-.08 or the 280?
The ballistics on the 708 is perfect for whitetails under 200lbs. and the 280 is slightly larger than the 270.
One important factor to consider is ammunition and every store in America stocks 270 ammo.

I shot my first 2 deer with a .270 Win.(Rem. 7400, I think). I also have a REmington 700 in .270 now and wouldnt trade it for anything. Great round and a great rifle. As Kwack says, it is "great ballistics, hard hitting and flat shooting". Pretty much, no matter who the manufacturer, you will end up with a great shooter if you put in the time and find out what ammo the rifle likes.

the 270 will work fine. the 223 is a varmint gun i wouldn't take it out looking to shoot deer just not enough power to cleanly get the job done, i know someone who did use a 223 and the results were not very good very crappy blood trail a spot here and there and that was about it never found the deer either.

If that is your two choices, then go with a 270.

In defense of the 223, depending on the type of ammo you use, it will leave a nasty exit wound which would include a blood trail. I've seen certain jacketed 223 rounds expand from hitting an aluminum can. I've seen them blow holes the size of saucers out of deer as well.

I think for the most part, you will see 223's being semi-auto and that seems to effect the consistancy of the accuracy of the weapon which would probably lead to poor shots making someone believe that it is not doing it's job when infact, the bullet didn't hit where they were aiming at in the first place.

Either way, too many chances to take on wounding an animal. There are much better rifles on the market for taking whitetails. Find the one that you are comfortable with. And as Doc said, find the ammo the gun likes as it will shoot different ammo with different consistancy.

we picked the heaviest bullet we could find for the 223 hoping to get the best penetration and it didn't work out for us but we don't know to much about the different styles of bullets either we figured the heavier the bullet the more energy it will have downrange but as i said we are novices to this.

223 or 270 or 30-06 huh? LOL IM JUST KIDDING! Go with the 270 guy.The 223 is just askin for trouble and time in the woods tracking.Do the deer a favor and shot the bigger of the two(270) and get good with it.You will need a good shot but it will do the job if shot well.

Most bullets for the 223, excepting the FMJ are designed for thin shinned varmits. And you want a varmit bullet to expand Vilently to dump its energy in a small target and stop it before it crawls back in its hole and to stop ricochets. They are not made for deer, they won't penetrate to the vitals, causing a nasty wound and a slow death. If you must use a 223 for deer try a bullet made for controled expansion and deep penetration like a 60 gr Nosler Partition or the Barnes Triple Shock is made in a 53 gr or 62 gr. Some of these must be loaded in a Premium line. Or if you handload.........Caution! longer ie: heavier bullets may not be compatible with some chambers, mostly semi's. Make sure the bullet is not forced into the rifling when loading.

270 win. a great caliber

Postby sako_338 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:25 am

I have shot many deer with 270 win. I have many rifles -28 and some magnums but all in all the deer and elk seem to fall just as fast and as hard with the 270m then with the heavy mags I use nosler 130 partitions always. I shoot a antonio zolie alpen bold actin rifle - a super tack driver, and nice to look at.

Reading this again, if someone was to choose a .223, make sure that you choose the right bullet for deer hunting. Most people just buy a box of ammo for it and go hunt. Then when they shoot a deer and lose it they blame it on the ammo. It is the ammos fault, but it is also the fault of the person who bought it. Alot of ammo made for .223's are for varmint hunting and are made to expand rapidly or almost explode on impact as most wamints are small, thin skinned animals. You want to find ammo that is made for deer. It doesnt expand as fast, allowing it to do the damage needed to bring down a whitetail and leave a good blood trail.
