That ole 30-30 has been a fine deer cartridge for many years. Good luck this season too.

I've got a number of deer getters, but one of my favorites to hunt with is my Marlin 30-30. I love it on a short field or in the woods, and it's never let me down.

I read recently that the "brush-buster" theory was a myth. That being, 30-30s or 35 remingtons do not actually perform better in the brush and that higher velocity bullets actually do slightly better. anyone have any info on that?

I would agree that the higer velocity bullets could possibly do better in brush. Also, the size of the projectile will help you out! Look at a 30 06. It is a perfect example of your theory!

My first deer was with a 12 gauge. I have a .30-30 Win and a .35 Marlin, both great guns.

It doesnt matter how fast/slow or how big a projectile is. If it hits anything, it has the chance of veering off target and hitting the animal other than in the kill zone. I hear alot of people say that the .30-30 or .35 will push through and keep on going, but if it hits anything it is over. As I said, you never know where is it going to go or if it is going to stop completely.

That's right Doc bullet weight doesn't give it the ablity to keep on going. On Dec 22,2005 while hunting with my savage ML 265gr bullet I shot at a deer at about 35 yds thru what I thought was an open lane only to find out that at about 25yds there was a small spindly bush about the size of your little finger the bullet never touched the deer and only half of the branch. Late afternoon and the branch with no leaves blended with the deer...Hate when that happens. Point being even a heavier bullet was deflected.

16 yr old, Winchester Model 100 carbine (hence the nickname) 308 with 180 gr Remington corelock, Weaver v4.5 scope. Coldest day I can remember in NC. high 16. 260 yds offhand. No place to take a rest, 4 point stood up in middle of feild when I was walking to try to get feeling back in my feet. Facing straight at me. 1st shoot a clean miss, but the deer was kind enough to turn and give me a standing broadside. Double lung shot that dropped him in his tracks. Thanks for the 30+yr old memory.

The 30-30 is a fine round. While there are rounds that do a better job at long ranges the old tried and true 30-30 does just fine within most hunters ranges.

My first deer fell ,so many years ago, to a 12 ga. slug, probably a Remington or Federal slug shot out of an old Franchi shotgun.
Havent ever had a chance to hunt with a 30-30, although I have an older single shot break action 30-30 and an old Marlin lever.
Shotguns are all we can use here.
Ive always used a 308, 30-06 or 7 mm mag when hunting in areas that allowed rifles.

I shot my first deer with a pse spirit. But my first gun kill was close to the 30-30 it was a 32 special.as far as the brush thing goes i think it must depend on the shooter and maybe the angle. I have seen deer in the brush be killed at 75 yds and be missed at 20 yds
Maybe its just a luck thing idk.

Me and my Dad shot out first deer with the same Winchester modle 94 30-30, and this year it will have another deer to add to its glory, and when an dif I ever have a son he will shoot his first deer with it as well.
the bigger the deer the harder they fall

Mine was with a Reminton 700 BDL 30-06. I was 15 years old it was a doe near Devils Tower Wyoming. Now, 27 years later I take them by the truckload with my Ruger M77 270. That one will never leave my safe, (except to hunt) untill it goes to my son.
