300 WSM! Does anyone have any experience with it?

Postby matt_3479 » Sat Dec 12, 2009 8:44 am

I posted something earlier saying that i might be getting a Browning A-Bolt Medallion brand new in the caliber 300. wsm. I don't know many who shoots this caliber but i do know its getting pretty popular. I was wondering who out there owns one, has used one for hunting or target shooting and if they liked it? What they use it on? a good story or experience with it? Im not worried about having a hard time finding ammo since my neighbor reloads and i have a store in town that sells them. thank you

Wait'll you see what ammo for those new short magnums is going to cost,....that's if you can even find the stuff in another year. Per-box prices have already doubled in less than a year!

And new federal regs may really put the cramp on handloaders, if the rumors are to be believed.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 300 WSM. I hand load all of my rounds. I use Barnes TSX Bullets and they are extremely effective. My father and I have had nothing but success with 300 WSM. They are big enough to take on any big game animal you will find yourself hunting. Only downside is the cost of ammo if you buy it. We don't, so we can load much more ammo for a lot less. To answer your question, I love this caliber. Deer generally don't go anywhere when hit by this caliber, providing it is a good hit.

I have the same gun as jamie and love it.I have only killed a few deer with it but it most certainly does the job.Yeah it is expansive to shoot but once its sighted in its not exactly yhe cal. that you want to target practice with. Not only because of the price but its a little hard on the shoulder.I have played around with it and was hitting clay pigeons at almost 400 yds. so its pretty accurate.I dont think the cal. is going anywhere for a while so dont be afraid to get one.

I'd agree with Tony, in that of all the recent short magnums they came out with, the .300 WSM is one most likely to survive. The others? Who knows????

I have a Browning BAR Shorttrac in .300 WSM. I love it!! Always had succes with it! I have been shooting it since I was 15 and its not too terrible on the shoulder, The medallion is a heavier gun so that should offset the recoil. You wont go wrong with it! i have recently retired mine after 4 years of good use. I recently bought a Remington 7MM Rem. Ultra Mag. Now you want to talk about recoil. Get one of those. But it gets the job done also. I will still continue to use the faithful .300 WSM! Gotta get ya one bud and give it a try. You wont be disappointed!
