Anybody here have any experience with a 7mm-08? And if so what did you think?

a 7mm-08??? Never heard of that. Maybe you are thinking of the 7mm Mag.

I think Browning makes one that is pretty small. When you first see it, you would think it is a youth rifle. The owner of the local outdoor store has one and raves about it.

I have seen one of those but it's a bit pricey for a youngster's first gun. My nephew is ready to rifle next season and his folks want to buy him a rifle. I was looking at the New England Arms Micro Hunter, it's a single shot and it comes in .243 or 7mm 08. $259.00 with a scope. I have never shot a 7mm08 and wasn't sure of the recoil. Got any experience with them Doc?

None on the firing range, but I have talked to several people personally that have them and they all say that it is a light recoiling caliber.

Felt recoil in pounds is similar to a .30-30. I saw that a .30-30(150gr) is rated at 10.6lb recoil and the 7mm-08(140gr) is rated at 12.6lb recoil. A .270(130gr) is 16.5lb recoil. Just for giggles, a 460 Wby. Mag. (500gr) is rated at 99.6lb recoil.

7mm-08 is a fine round to start someone young off with. my dad owned two differnt models and the recoil is very light, not much worse than a .243!!!

7 08 is one of the most complete rounds that money can buy. A 308 necked down to 7mm. I owned one until someone else wanted enough to steal it and bought another one today. Very mild recoil and with a 140 Gr Bullet is awesome on deer. Remington makes this caliber in the 700 SPS with 24" barrel.[img][/img]

I got lucky...

Postby horsky » Thu Nov 06, 2008 5:10 pm

I used to be a big 30-06 guy. My great grandfather used one and bagged a bunch of deer in VT with it. My first deer rifle was a savage 110 30-06 and it shot .55" groups bench rested. Due to a finacial strain getting ready to get married I had to sell that rifle and a couple other guns. This summer my step-father handed me down a rifle he had never shot. I had the choise between a new ruger in .257 Roberts and the lovely sako 7mm-08. The sako was originally chambered for .243 and was purchased just for the action. The gun was customized to 7mm-08 with a douglas air gauge barrel and many other special tweeks. I loved my 06 but it was nice to get the 7mm-08. Lighter rifle for the thick woods of Southern New Hampshire and a heck of alot less recoil. I was able to sight this gun in and it was an absolute tack driver. I was very impressed with the performance of this rifle with Remington 140gr. Core-Lokt. I also tested the winchester silver tips 140gr and did not get quite the same performance.

7mm08Rem, she's my baby!

Postby mic65frit » Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:16 am

Dude,

you can't go wrong with a 7mm08Rem for a round...the ballistics are awesome, the recoil is light, the round is deadly accurate.

Go to Federal.com and you can compare the ballistics of any round to another. All the vital stuff is in there. I've had a 30/06, loved it, it was a Remington ADL with a 3X9 on her....great rifle, but, had to sell it when times got a little tight...should have sold "wife 1.0" instead.

I replaced that 30.06 with my Winchester Model 70 "Classic Compact", I think my scope weighs more than the gun, seriously I live to shoot this rifle, I just wish that I would have a nice buck walk into my line of fire so I could take him.

I'm using Hornady Light Magnum 139 gr SST's they held a really nice group at the range, and from what I've read on another forum site that the exit wound on a Whitetail is about the size of a golf ball.

I'll never get rid of this rifle...I've learned my lesson, if times get tight again, I'm selling "Wife 2.0". LOL
