A question about bow noise

Postby markfromLI » Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:42 am

I went shotting lastnight and heard a new noise coming from my bow. It appear the peep sight is hitting my string. Not only do I get a slight noise (annoying as hell) I also get a slight vibration as well. Any reccomendation as to what I might be able to do to stop this?

On another note, My fletchings are getting beat up on my drop away rest (or from my arrows starting to group tighter and hitting them). How hard is it to re-fletch arrows and or is it cheaper or better to just get new ones?

your peep sight should be set between the strands of your bow string. I'm not really sure what part of your peep is making the noise. As for your arrow fletching, if your fletching is touching your drop away then the rest isn't tuned properly. The fletches should totally clear the rest. At any rate, just take the torn up arrows to a bow shop and have them refletched. It's pretty cheap to have it done.

Thanks... I was told it's the tubing hitting the string when the arrow is realsed ( is this a common problem, it seems to be). I was told to maybe get rid of the tube peep and get a different kind it should help.

Kwack... do you reccomend supressors. I currently don't use one... No vibration in the bow and before this I never felt a vibration before. I shoot a Parker Trailblazer.

The noise may be someting that has worked loose ie stabilizer, sights check everthing on you bow and make sure everything is tight.

I'm a real stickler about how noisy my bow is. I used to shoot the peeps with the tubing on them but took it off because they were noisy. I also have string leeches on the string and Simms shock pads on the limbs. My bow is extremely quiet. I have missed deer before and gotten the chance for a second shot. I believe it is because my bow is so quiet but I could be wrong. The extra stuff I put on it may cost me a few feet per second but it still shoots in the 290 fps range. And I'm not a huge believer in the "speed kills" theory. Although it helps, speed isn't everything.

I got rid of my peep with tubing because of the noise and also because the tubing broke and hit me in the face. That was that. I would also check all the moving parts on your bow, it could be a loose screw like backstrap said. You can hold the bow and hit the riser and listen for vibrations.

As a rule of thumb, whenever I pull my bow out of the case I gently hit the side of the top and bottom limbs to see if I can hear any noises coming from the bow. If done correctly you should hear any possible noise coming from limbs, riser, handle and any hardware you have attached to the bow. If you say it's the peep, which by the way, I've never heard of that before, I would see if you can get it re-rapped so it's tighter to the string. The other issue you may experience, if it is indeed your peep, is you run the risk of it moving down or up your bow string. You obviously know the other possible issues of your peep moving...

As far as fletching your arrows, I find it a lot of fun and an inexpensive way to get the kids involved in bow hunting. It's probably true that you can have them fletched for the same amount as if you did them yourself but there is a real satisfaction of doing them yourself. The other part of this is you can experiment with different types fletchings. If your drop away rest is tearing your fletching off it's probably not set up correctly, the timing is clearly off... You might want to aim in different areas of the target to avoid defletching arrows...

Have any of you guys seen something by the name of FOB's .... Fletchings only better. Check the sight that lets you view videos (don't want to put the name scared of linking lol). Something Tube.... and put in FOB.

I'd be interested to see if any of you have used these before and what you think.

Mark I have seen the FOB's your talking about I have never tried them nor do I know anyone who has. Looks a little to radical for me but may they work I don't. I'll stick with my Bohning 2" blazers they shoot great, very sturdy and were designed to be shot with broad heads.
