A spanish 270 Win. fan

Postby P2PG2 » Thu Apr 10, 2008 5:53 am

Hello Everybody.
I am a big 270 Win. fan. I own two rifles chambered for this cartridge. A Sako and a spanish Santa Barbara (Mauser 98). Its a great cartridge and almost perfect for the size of the spanish game (red deer, wild boar, mufflon, fallow deer, chamois, roedeer, ibex and barbary sheep). Normally I shot 130 grains Federal Nosler Partitions fo most of the game when stalking, eventually Sierra GameKing BTSP 130 grains for roedeer, which are quite small (bucks average 30 Kg. more or less). For driven hunts (very popular in Spain for red deer and wild boars) I switch to 150 grains FederaL Nosler Paritions or Winchester Power Points, looking for more stopping power on closer ranges.
Recently I,ve been hearing that american ammo producers are loading the 270 Win. preety soft just to make room for the 270 WSM. I wonder if you guys in the USA can tell me if this is right. I know theres an important reloading culture in the states, and I am sure you know better that us in Spain about this. Reloading is not that easy here basically cause of legal restrictions and stuff availability.
Thks vm.
Best regards from Spain.

GLad to have a new member, especially from across the ocean. I am just as big of a fan of the .270 as you are and as far as I can tell, there hasn't been a slow down in the production of .270 rounds. If anything there are more varieties available then when I first started shooting one.

Hi Again.
First of all thks for answering. I probably havent expressed myself correctly or either you misundertood what I meant. I wasnt asking if theres as slow down in production. I know its not, and I,m happy to find such a great offer of ammo for the 270.
What I meant is that I keep hearing rumours about the 270 being "loaded down" by american ammo producers .

I love a .270. just bought a remington mod 700 lss grey laminate. Its a beautiful gun. I just got it glass bedded, floated, jewel hair trigger at 2.8 lbs, and put a leupold vari x 3 4x10x50 silver on it. took forever to find the scope. It shoots a 1.5 inch group at 500 yards. I love the caliber and the rifle.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. Could you maybe clarify "loaded down", I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

Basically what I mean is that factory ammo is being loaded under its full potential. It will be easy to get quite a few more fps from 270 commercial rounds.

I haven't noticed a difference. My guns still shoot the same as they always have.

In one I shoot Federal Premium 130 grain Noslers. In the other I shoot hornady 140 grain boat tails. Each gun likes a little different brand and that's what I have found to work best for them.
