Advice anybody!

Postby Veronikas » Thu Oct 06, 2011 5:32 pm

Hi everyone new to the forum and looking for help.
I hunt in northern MN during the first weekends of November, I hunt on a 1/4 mile x 1/2 mile piece of wooded land, not sure how many achers exactly but what im wondering is what I can do for a reasonable price to try to attract deer and bring them in other than buying a feeder. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I hunt Near Bemidji,Mn there's a few things you can try. One Put salt ($ 4.79) out in the Summer months to get the deer to the area. maybe set up a camera on the salt to see what kind of visitors you are getting. Make sure your not hunting right over your salt, because you know the boys at the DNR might not like that You know as well as I do they always have a bird in the air watching. I went over to Half price books the other day and looked in the hunting section and found Hunting Big Woods Bucks. I just started reading it and It got me hooked. Hey it was $ 3.00 I'm not going to Scream. Another cheap thing is talk to the deer Grunt, bleat, Fawn distress call that will get deer moving towards you. You tube/goggle how to call if your not sure or set up a topic and ask what other hunters do in here. Best of luck to you Happy hunting!

I would consider looking into a decoy. That is usually right around the peak rut and can be very successful. It will help to have it in a oper area where it can be seen easily. It also adds a new twist to your hunt. Give it a try. You never know!

Find the bedding area and the water/food source. Then find the trails they use to get from one to the other. Hunt the trails.

I know i am a bit late,,and have a couple ideas if you are going to keep hunting that location. A whitetail only has a few needs,,meet those needs and you have it made in the shade.

Food Food plots or acorns/persimmon/apple trees work well if no row crops nearby

Water

Saftey/bedding/shelter Forrest,,groves of cedar and pine work very well,,,if you dont have a lot of timber try planting a small gove of cedars/pine in a natural travel route near food/water somewhat out of the wind.

Reproduction (NUFF SAID)

TRAVEL ROUTES,,,this is the most underestimated of everything,,,if they dont have good travel routes,,they wont stay much, they are pretty lazy (like most people)
