Advice on a deer rifle for a 14 year old girl

Postby newdeerhunter » Sat Nov 27, 2004 11:05 pm

I'm going to buy a rifle for my 14 year old daughter, a co-worker says a 243 is best, anybody have any advice for a light weight rifle?

Lots of folks go with the NEF Handi Rifle. Pretty accurate little rifle, a buddy of mine has one in .223 and .243, I've shot both, seem to be alright.

remember to check with your state laws to see if your rifle selected is legal or not

it all depends if you can use a rifle or shotgun only. for a rifle, i'd recommend a 7mm-08, .243, .308, .223, .22-250. if you can only use a shotgun, i would reccomend a Remington 870 Youth Model in a 20ga. The recoil will be minimal and it will kill a deer just as dead as the magnum calibers

Hey BigBuck --- if the shots are going to 150 yds or less, the Marlin 336 youth model in a 30.30 makes a fine rifle. Not too loud, not much kick, and kills deer dead.

I agree with quigley. I got my girl one in .243 and it's a good little package.
Real lightweight as well.

If she's gonna be hunting with props (shooting houses, stands, etc...), then perhaps a .270? Can't go wrong there....I started on them at 7.

But, for a first timer...then, you can't go wrong with a .243 if that's what you're leaning towards.

I'm 14 now and have been using a 243 since i was 9. It's a great little gun with just about no recoi at all and still hits just as hard as any other rifle(you don't need a cannon to kill a deer). You should check your state laws frist though, make sure you can use rifles. Good luck!
I've been hunting since i was 9 and I still love it now being 14. I'm always dreaming of killing a buck as big as the one's my dad kills ( he just harvested a 17 point this year here in Jefferson county ), but this year I got a really nice 8 at least.

My Daughter shot her first deer this year at tweleve years of age.
I got her a remington model 7 youth. She harvested a doe at 110 yards. I sure was a proud papa that day.

little lady deer rifle

Postby smacarac » Fri Dec 17, 2004 6:28 pm

The 7-30 waters has higher velocity, flater trajectory and also greater retained down range energy then the 150 grain 30-30 with less recoil my wife loves this little spitfire. The case is based on the 30-30 same 2.04 lenghth rim and body dia.the case is designedfor a 139 gr bullet also has a muzzle velocity of2750fps at 200 yrds hits with a little over a 1000fps of energy. So here endith the lesson. :) :)

LOL smac --- and that'll teach you Quigs. I think the 7-30 is a great little round, just to hard to deal with unless you reload. :)

Thought he was directing this to his previous post about the 7x30 with a ? mark at the end of it. The question mark is what threw me. Guess I read it wrong. Don't own one, so saw no need to go to the books. Figured I'd leave that to the boys that shoot it.

I'm 14(going on 15) and I use a 30-30 It shoots great! My dad shot it at the 200 yard range and it was only an inch low. I got my first buck (8pt) this year with it at about 150 yards. Good-Luck gun shopping :P

Don't you have to be 14 to hunt with a gun?

mo. hunting age

Postby carnivore » Tue Mar 08, 2005 8:13 pm

I'm pretty sure in missouri you can hunt the youth hunt when you can aim and fire a firearm or bow on your own either freehand or on a rest so there's really no age restrictions but at age 12 your required to attend a hunter safety course, and can't hunt without an adult within arms length of a kid up to age 15 and from 15 on you're legal to hunt alone but must have a hunter safety ed. card on your person if born after 1967 and any adult accompanying a youth on a hunt must posess a hunter safety ed. card.

1st thing is.. make sure your buying HER rifle ! not one that YOU want to
use now and then. Reason I say that is alot of dads ,buy there Kids guns
that they want to use and more so offen then not , don't fit the young
hunter. I have two young hunters, that passed hunter safety in 2004
ages 7 and 9 all on there own. No there not going to hunt by themselfs
That will be a long time from now.
Rifle's for your daughter is all about how much $$$ you want to spend and what she likes. So take her to a few gun shops and see what see like's and what fits her. ...NEF youth single shot in 243 around $230 ,
Savage youth bolt action for around $370 Remmington model 7 youth in 243 or 7mm-08 in synthetic stock $440 ,
Weatherby has Vangaurd Compact that comes with two stocks a 12 1/2
inch length of pull black painted hard-wood stock and a full size synthetic
stock. in 243 and .308 win. it's new for 20005, dealers around 400, so it
should be had for around $450 Browning a-bolt micro hunter $550
Make sure she has warm hunting clothes and her own binoculars.

Cant' go wrong with the choices here and thease guns have good resale
value if bought right.

i would suggest you getting a .243, it has the take down power. flat shooting trajectory, minimal recoil.. im 14 and use a .308 i dont think that, that caliber gun is appropriate for a girl that is getting her first gun trust me it is a cannon and it bangs and has bad recoil!

yeah i have a 7mm .08 and it is a great gun to begin with i hav been huntin for about 5 years and still use it. it has great range and is very reliable. you will kill the deer with a reasonable shot and another good thing is you will be able to use this gun for the rest of your life if u use proper care

243 is what i use,it will put one down at 200 easy. but it isnt a good timber gun. for that a 30-30 is best.it also packs a kick. so a shotgun might work for her.semi-auto reminngton 12-guage

a 243 would be good or a 16 ga shot gun which has same recoil of 20 ga but with more power

Or you could get her into bow hunting
it has a longer season so there are more oppertunities to hunt and less hunters to compeat with

im 14 and i use a bow
