Ammo

Postby Buck It » Mon Feb 14, 2005 8:34 am

For years I was using balistic tip factory ammo in the 150 grain size for my 30-06. I was killing deer but the would run a hundred yards or more everytime. I was tired of tracking deer and I told a budddy about this. He loaded a serra boat tail soft point in a 150 grain load. Since I started using his ammo I have killed 5 deer and 3 hogs and none of them have taken more than a step.Im shooting the same spot only the ammo has changed. Ive killed them from 30 yards to 200 yards with the same effect. Do you guys have the problem with your deer running a long ways after you shoot them? Good Hunting Buck It

I use a 270 Win factory bullet(Winchester Power Point or Remington) with 130 grains. I shot one deer with that gun this year and she dropped instantly, and never flinched. I didn't hit the vitals, but actually hit above the vitals through the spine.
I am not totally familiar with how the 30-06 reacts to different grains, or even if 130 grain is available for that caliber....but I do know that for the 270 Win. 150 grain is a little too much for a deer..(unless you are shooting through some cover and you need a little extra ummph to blast through)..the bullet can blow right through and not slow down enough inside the deer to fully expand and cause the destruction necessary to drop the animal instantly.
I have also talked to a few hunters that felt that, from there experience with the 30-06, they decided to switch to a 270 Win. or other because the their bullets were blowing right through the deer without killing them.

I've read in other forums about hunters having problems with balistic tips. I have not used them myself but I shoot an 06 and love it.

I've shot Nosler Ballistic Tips for years out of my 30.06 (you used to have to reload 'em) and now in my .300WSM too and switched to the Winchester Supreme Ballistic SilverTip (basically the same bullet) in factory ammo and I've never had a problem. If you slip the bullet behind the shoulder, they may run a few yards, but you'll ruin less meat. If you put it square into the shoulder, they drop dead, but you mess up at least one shoulder. When I'm hunting fields, I shoot behind the shoulder. When I'm in the woods or want to drop big daddy where he stands, I bust the shoulder. Bullet placement matters more than the type of bullet in my experience. :)

heres what i think happens... you shoot the deer in the lungs, it runs until the lungs fill with blood and it drowns or the lungs collapse and it suffocates. as my brother says "the oil pressure drops". you shoot them in the shoulder and you break the bone and the energy carries to the spine which either breaks it or paralizes them.
i use a .270 in 130gr. and the bullet always passes thru, 1yd. to 100yds. i have had only one deer drop where it stood, the rest run less than 100yds. i dont mind going to get a deer because thats part of the hunt. if someone doesn't feel like getting it they need to quit hunting(dont mean to hurt anyones feelings). i used to use winchester super x power point, but i switched to a 140gr. hornady ballistic tip earlier this month. haven't used it hunting yet, but i hope it performs as good, if not better than the accuracy it produces. i have read they expand greatly and keep at least 85+% of their weight.
my opinion is to go online and check the ammunition manufacturers and see what their bullets do. most show what the bullet looks like after its shot. you can also ask your hunting buddies or local outdoor store what they use. or a website like this. hehe hope this helps.

I've hunted deer with a .270 for years. 130 or 150 put them down just as fast either way. As far as shooting through brush, I don't do it. It doesn't matter how heavy a bullet is, the smallest twig can push a bullet offline enough to make it a bad hit. It can also make the bullet tumble rather than spin in a spiral. That absolutely kills your accuracy and can really cause a bad hit. If you want to shorten your blood trails shoot them in the spine right in front of their shoulders. It won't ruin any meat and the deer drops on the spot.

30-06 ammo

Postby bambeklr » Fri Jun 03, 2005 10:31 pm

I shot a 30-06 for years when I fist statrted hunting with a rifle in marylnd and pennsylvania. I shot 165gr botails with the soft lead tip. I Only had one deer drop and I shot it in the head. I would shoot them behind the shoulder and they always ran. I used to get urinated off when everyone elses deer would fall in a pile. That was until I found out they only shot them in the shoulder. I shoot a browning a-bolt 7mm mag with the boss sytem now. Havent had to many sprinters since the change. The only thing that sucks is it leaves a bruise on the side of the deer bigger than a basket ball. It messes up the meat a little. But no more trackin.

Actually, my very first gun, before I got tha infamous 30/30 was a MI 30 calibre carbine that was given to me by my grandfater. It was from WWII and had notches on the butt. I never shot at a deer with it but, it sure was fun to target practice! :D The 30/30, they would usually run 40 to 100 yards. Then the 308, pop and drop. But it was an old Mossberg and she kicked like a mule! Then the 7mm! They usually never hear the gun go off! The 243, I gota watch it on the long body shots. Most time if deer is quartering slightly, the bullet won't exit and ya have a weak blood trail. I like tha Rem. 7mm more, and it doen't kick hardly at all!

7mm mag

Postby bambeklr » Sat Jun 04, 2005 12:23 am

My 7 kicks alittle but not horrable. The only problem I have is that it is so loud. It has the boss sytem on it. i shot it over water on maryland one time at a deer in the swamp. Never again!! I was gonna shoot more than one but after the gun went off I would have rather curled up in fetal position and cried as I sucked my thumb. It is a great tool but just so loud. You can feel the air displacement 6 feet behind me hen I shoot. My friends say it feels like a 40 mph wind gust hits them. Crazy huh.

I hunt with a guy who has a 7 mm with the boss system. He scares the crap out of me anytime he shoots within 500 yards of where I'm hunting. I told him he needs to get a silencer for that gun, that way the two would balance each other out and the sound would be managable. :D

boss

Postby bambeklr » Sun Jun 05, 2005 12:03 am

I will tell you what, I stopped taking it on meat hunts. I only take it the first week of rifle when I am looking for a good buck. If I am gonna shoot a doe or just hunting for anything I bring my 06. I have found that the boss works great when you have that ammo that you want to shoot but your gun doesnt want to. Just use the key and adjust to the bullet grain, powder charge and bullet style on the chart and it pulls your group tighter. It's all about barrel vibration. I do love this gun. I put a leupold 6.5x20x50 on it and you talk about a feild and marsh gun. Wow, I even amaze myself.
