Any advice for a future Mule Deer hunt?

Postby Kevin W » Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:03 pm

Hello All, Kevin here. I am starting the process of looking for info for a Mule Deer Hunt for 2013 or 2014. In 2013 my son will be 12 and I would like to take him on an out west mule deer hunt. Having never hunted out west I am unsure about area's, units, preference points, ect. I know many may laugh at this post but I have to start somewhere. This post along with checking the Western states Game and Fish websites are my starting points. I am most interested in Colorado and would like to know if it is possible to build up points until 2013 or 2014 so we can tip the scales in our favor when we do put in for the actual draw? Public access with very limited tag #'s would appeal to us and this will be a do it yourself adventure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin.

My neighbor hunts in southern Montana and loves it. Both years have came home with a successful hunt. 1st year shot a 320 pound 170 class mule deer. 2nd year shot a 190 pound 173 5/8 class mule deer. he goes with a bunch of friends and shots are anywhere from like 20-500 yards

In a different post ....

matt_3479 wrote:last year i was invited from a friend to go down to Montana where his friend owned 50 000 acres of land, bordering South Dakota where i got a tag to take a mule or a whitetail. Last year i spotted a Monster Mule 387 yards away, i took aim and i squeezed the trigger on my buddies 243. win and dropped this beautiful animal in its tracks. No ground shrinkage at all. It weighed 320 pounds, and scored 170. This was my first mule and what a monster.

i just got back yesterday for my second time going down after either a mule or a whitetail. I came across a beautiful 155 class whitetail and let my buddy take it for inviting me back. Last hour of the last day and we came across another beautiful mule deer. This one didn't look as big, but it was still great. I took this one at just under 100 yards, shooting 243. win again. It weighed 260 and scored 173 and 3/8's. Guess i was Wrong. This one had more points to score, but wasn't as this or wide or tall. This one was more uniform. Another great trophy.
Hoping to go back next year and take a nice Pronghorn or a Whitetail this time.

So which is it Matt? Was it you or your neighbor? Tell you what, why don't you get all of your stories straight and I'll let you start posting again, until then do a little more reading and a lot less posting.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.

I posted the smaller one.
My neighbor wanted to post his story on the web and used my file on this site, and 4 or 5 others.

I lived in Wyoming for a few years and its a great place to hunt, there is plenty of game and public land.
