I own three ruger rifles and my brother owns one I'm guessing it's a 77 model which i'm really fond of. For the money i feel they are one of the most durable and reliable guns you can buy. The only complaint i have about them is the stiff trigger pull which i'm gonna get my 77/17 honned down to drop the trigger pull but other than that they are very reliable guns

I've got one brother who won't own anything but a ruger and one that won't own anything but a savage. Which they've proven both in the field and the range to be very adequate for the money.

I have a Ruger 270, and it has needed a little work to become a tack driver, but had "killing" accuracy out of the box. If you get it expect to spend another $75 for a trigger, as Ruger has decided to put the worst factory triggers in their new rifles (MkII only). The old tang safety models had much better triggers and seem to usually need a little less tweaking to get dead on.

Mine now has a Timney trigger and a Bell & Carlson stock, both large improvements over the factory stuff.

On Rugers

Postby federali » Thu Nov 24, 2005 6:49 pm

In general, Rugers are sturdy rifles and well worth the money. I have a Ruger Mannlicher that, after tuning by a gunsmith specializing in Mannlichers, can put three rounds under a dime at 100 yards. Also have a 70s vintage Ruber Deerstalker that's taken a whole bunch of deer in the eastern woods.

Straight out of the box, I don't think they're as accurate as they could or should be. While there are exceptions, if you hope to place three rounds under a nickel at 100 yards, the rifle will need to be tuned.

You cannot go wrong with a Ruger.

There both great guns but, for the money and accuracy in my opinion, you can't beat a Savage. The other day, we took a brand new Rugar and a brand new Savage 270's and shot them at 100 and 200 yards. With both shooters, the Savage held tighter groups than the Rugar, bar none!

The rugar looks better but, if looks could kill, well, you get the picture...

Both are top notch in my book!

Rugers are the nicest finished American made rifles. If you are a deer hunter you will be pleased. The triggers can be adjusted by a 'smith for about $25 and then they are then very good.

I've got 5 Rugers, never sold one. They are not as accurate out of the box as Savage. But if you are the average hard hunting PA deer hunter, you will never lack accuracy for killing deer.

Personally I do like the thumb safey models (old M77, #1, #3)

Savage has accutrigger. So, at half the price plus saving the $25 for the trigger job, that's a really nice scope that you can put ontop of it!
