Any rabbit hunters out there?

For those of us who enjoy the pursuit of the little critters too.

Any rabbit hunters out there?

Postby yellodog1 » Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:54 am

Rabbit hunting used to be really big in Vermont. Its started to drop off in popularity, I guess maybe with the loss of habitat for one reason or another.
I havent been for a long time, but its alot of fun.

a buddy of mine a few years back bought a couple of beagles for rabbitt. then after a year or two he decided to try to start his own bloodline. all of a sudden hes got 18 beagles. he penned in an area out back of his house and started running the dogs on rabbits and did field trials. he may have sold 2-3 of them but he still has a bunch left. i think we'll probably get out a few times this year

We ran my place last year after deer season. The dogs were brought in on an hour and a half drive so, they didn't run too great. However, what they did run it seems that everybody missed so

I will be stalking them this year around the food plots. We have alot of them.

I usually get out rabbit hunting once or twice each year. We have snowshoe hare, cottontails and jack rabbits here. I'll try and get some pics posted later this year.

I love to hunt ruffed grouse too (or partridge as some say). Ducks and Geese too! I love it all. So many tastey creatures, so little time. :( Right now these Canada geese are all over the place. It's good here until mid November for geese, then it slows down a bit.

This weekend I'm heading up to the West Arm of Lake Nipising to catch some walleye and muskie. That lake has awsome ice fishing too. If you southern boys ever want a fun adventure, try Lake Nipising in January. There are lots of heated ice huts to rent. You can sleep right on the ice.

How's that for off topic? :)

Cheers,

Down here when the only time you say ice and fishing in the same sentence is when you are talking about cooling down the bee... I mean drinks. :D

I usually run rabbits after deer season is over, as I usually hunt rabbits where I hunt deer. I shot 5 last year. I am planning on getting a few more this year.

i like tons a snow when i hunt rabbits like 6" to a foot or so is perfect its pretty easy to find em, i went rabbit hunting yesterday on some state land and had no luck whatsoever we saw some squirrels but all of em 80+ yards and they got to thickets before we got any shots off so it was pretty lousy but hey i'll be out later this week, gotta get my butt out there before i start up college in about 2 weeks.

Finally.........
Finally got some snow, about 1.1/2 inches(hoped for more). Me and my buddy are going to try to get out tomorrow. Went out today and say only 1(too far and in some brush, bout 50 yds), few woodpeckers, 8 deer (about 30 yds away, had bird shot tho + season is already over). Hope to go whack 3 or 4 tomorrow.

Went out huntin' today across the way and got 6 between me and my buddy. Took only about 45 mins and we had a huge advantage, 10 inches of snow, about 2 feet in some areas, so the rabbits were slow and easy to hit. Still fun though. :D :D

I sure havent. Been to busy working to make money and getting ready for turkey season. My days off are during the week when all my hunting buddies are at work.

i managed to miss one 4 times a couple ago it was rather pathetic, i just couldn't connect i could throw snow all over it but not hit the thing with steel it was quite embarassing i am just happy no one saw it, i was just banging around with some goose loads and it jumped out and my first shot was at about 5 ft and the next 2 within 25 and the 4th at about 10 ft, after the first 3 i chased it to my barn and cornered it and slowly brought my gun up to shoot it and it ran through a tiny hole in the wall and as it was running through i shot a 4 inch hole through the wall but still didn't get it. oh well maybe next time actually i think i am gonna go out right now and try to regain some confidence back by hitting it, i'll use the proper load this time 1 oz of lead 8 shot and a improved cylinder choke oughta work a bit better bigger pattern and more BBs.

When i lived in So Cal, I hunted cottontail as long as the season was open, Sometimes come back home with my daily bag. It is lots of fun hunting cottontails and boy they sure are good to eat. My whole family grew up on eating rabbits! Best part of it is that they are very lean and delicious.

I have a beagle that's a year old. She Is excellent at tracking and goes crazy when she sees a cootontail. I have never trained a Beagle before. What shoul be my next phase of training?

I love to hunt rabbits during the months of December and January. I have a black lab who likes to flush them for me. I shot about 15 during the 08-09 season.

rabits are good but there are definitely easier things to hunt than those speedy little critters

I'd rather eat them that hunt um. Fried up with some gravy and a biscuit or two makes for a hard to beat breakfast.
