It is a family tradition to at least make the opener. Normally we camp out and have a good time. However, I don't allow folks to use a 22 because the land that I squirrel hunt has pastures all around it full of cows. It is an agreement me and tha ol' farmer made.

What do you use? If I had the time I would probably use an old .410 that I have.

Normally a 12ga pump but, sometimes I like to use a 20ga single shot, just for the sport of it.

I thought a 12 ga. might be overkill, but I suppose with short brass.

Have shot 11 squirrels so far with that new .54 Hawken. She's a tack driver loaded down for small game. Head shots are the rule.

I brought my dad with me on my property opening morning this year and we ended up with 6 squirrels and a rabbit. It was really too windy, but we still had a blast.

I have a couple of .22's that I can use, but prefer a 12ga. or 20 ga. I really like the shotgun as I can use it from fall all the way until season end. The .22 is a great squirrel getter, but I just cant seem to get away from the shotgun.

And yes yellodog, I use low brass.

we all hate seeing squirrels on the bird feeder they make a huge mess we would rather see the birds on there, we all shoot em its just a matter of who sees em first, theres 11 people living in my house so it can be pretty hard at time since half of em would drop anything they are doing at the chance to shoot a squirrel. it keeps thing interesting i guess.

used to have a blue-tic & walker (at least I think thats what it was)but I swear that thing could understand English . We would say Maud ( that was it's name) lets go get some squirrels and it would hunt them all day . then you could say lets get us some rabbits and it would do nothing but hunt rabbits . I mean you had to see the expressions on it's face when you would tell it to do these things .I really do think it knew what we were saying .It hunted coon and pheasant too and it hunted them all very very well .

It depends on how close you are to other houses or animals. If close to other houses or lots of animals, shotguns. If hunting wide open areas you can use a .22. I think if I was you, I would stick with what you have. The argument of which is better for squirrels, shotguns or .22's is a never ending argument. It is along the same lines as, What is the best deer caliber. It is all up to the shooter.

Used the 10/22 with the new scope today(sighted scope in this morning and went out around 11:45AM)and bagged 1, about 3lb, fox squirrel. That gun is a tack-driver. She'll hit a 2" diameter cicrcle at 50 yards all day long.
I used to use a 20 gauge Rem. 870 Express Magnum, but since I bought the sight for this 10/22, a .22 I shall use :!: :!:

i shot me 3 squirrels yesterday more just plinking with a .338 win mag from my friends house but it was pretty fun them things are little pests they had a couple get in the attic on day they made a huge mess with the insulation and what not, lol it was a real good thing for me, now they hate squirrels with a passion and want me and a couple friends to get rid of all of em, and i tell ya there are a lot a squirrels on 100 acres, we are set for life we just have to sit on the deck and watch the bird feeder and blast em off when they come, lol its perfect a .338 was a little overkill though it blew em clean in half pretty well and i think i will stick with the 2 3/4 #4-#3 buckshot quite a bit less recoil and you can reach out a little farther then normal birdshot last time we were out there i brought light little trap loads 1145 fps 1 oz 8 shot it wasn't doing a very effective job past 30 yards.

This squirrel season is about coming to a close, due to them about to have their babies and I want a good population next year. Even though this season is over for me though, I still am scouting and looking for good nut/nest trees. One thing I was wondering though was what tactics you use to squirrel hunt. I like to sit-and-wait by personal preference because you see other animals and have a better chance of not scaring the squirrels away. A disadvantage to this method though is that there may not be squirrels in this particular area at that particular time and you may not see anything. But, this is still my favorite way to hunt squirrel.

So getting on, what method of squirrel hunting do you guys use?
Also, how and when do you use this method, in the fall or spring, .22 or shotgun, early/late season? Just wanting to know how and when to use it to up my table fare. 8)

I like to sit in a spot for twenty minutes or so and move a couple of hundred yards and sit for another twenty minutes. I always use a .22. Occassionally I'll go with a buddy of mine with his dogs and tree them.

I like to sit on one spot and call to them. I then wait and see if they are coming to me or if I need to go to them. If I dont see or hear anytinhg, I move. So I guess my short answer would be, I spot and stalk for squirrel.

i like to walk around and try catch em running to a tree find the tree they climbed in have a buddy or someone walk around the tree and the squirrel comes to my side and bang its over and once we have worked over the area pretty good we sit down and have a smoke and watch the trees for any squirrels coming out of hiding we can usually get 3-4 per person doing this on a good day, even on bad days we can get 1-2 per person, i like using a highcaliber rifle when watching from the deck or something .338 win mag is a preference that way i can reach out to 200 yards with no problems and its good practice for hunting bigger game, if you can shoot a squirrel at 200 yards your not gonna have much of a problem killing a deer at 200 yards, try keep the bullet in the top half and the back legs are still good for meat which is usually all i take anyways there just ain't much meat in them things any where else.

I use my henry .22 Lever action. Nice gun for squirrel hunting. I've also used a 12 guage shotgun. Nice for close shots. As for cooking them, you can tear the meat off and cook it as a soup or stew, or my favorite is soaking it in french onion soup, and just eating the squirrel like chicken legs.

Occasionally i go with a 28 gauge if I'm bored. The real way to do it is with a lead pellet gun. when i just started deer hunting my grandpa would let me bring one of those out and shoot at squirrels so i would learn to stay in the deer stand longer than 30 minutes. Stil do it occasionally if there's abd weather for deer.

Our late small game season was over this past Saturday, also it was the day of our annual squirrel tournament, here are the results.

254 hunters registered (six squirrels is the daily limit)
487 squirrels were shot---444 greys---26 fox Sq.---15 red---2 black
608lbs was the total weight for all squirrels
the winner had a conbine weight (six squirrels) of 9.39lbs
the prize for the largest was for a fox squirrel weighing 2.81lbs
the prize for the smallest was.32lbs (yes we have a prize for the smallest, I don't make the rules)
needless to say we had alot of squirrel pot-pie and squirrel hot wings at the awards ceremony Saturday night.
I don't kill innocent animals, just the ones that look guilty.

The 1st animal I started hunting was the squirrel. I loved to hunt them when I was 15,16,17,18 years old. I used a .22 and sometimes a 12 gauge. In the early season I sometimes used a squirrel in distress whistle. You would bend a sapling tree and bang it against the forest floor and then blow the whistle. 55% of the time, that would get the squirrels excited, and they would start barking, that would give away their location. Then I would sneak up, and shoot them. Other times I would sit still with my back against a tree for about 30-45 mintues then move to another spot. I haven't gone squirrel hunting the past few seasons, but I still enjoy it and have fond memories of my past hunts.
