I am about an hour north of Corning, but that is no closer to Long Island. Sorry.

Monroe County NY deer rut

Postby brim8484 » Fri Nov 02, 2007 6:02 pm

Seen 4 bucks on Halloween morning. The first three @ 8:00 were a spike,7 and a decent 8 travelling together which was suspicious. I got caught trying to draw on the 8 by the spike which was behind me at this point and they all bolted. As fate (LUCK) would have it, good fortune soon came my way right down the deer run. A doe was being followed very closely by a whopper buck which I toasted from 10 yards. He ran over everything for 50 yards and was down. Wish I could attach a photo. Rough scored at 150 and is a beauty......The three bucks traveling together were probably plotting some sort of overthrow of the King..... who by the way will be moving into a nice spot reserved on my wall for him next year sometime when the taxidermy man finishes him.

Hey brim, where abouts do you hunt? I havent seen quite as much daytime activity since the full moon around my spot in Lima. I am hoping to finish out bow season with another kill this week or next weekend. I may head down to our camp in Belfast next weekend for a day.

NY Buckhunter.....What have you got so far? I had a nice 9 too that my partner tagged the week before. Only have video on him/no pictures. Probably a 120.
8F Brighton/Henrietta area. Lots of sign as well as the Perinton area. Souther Tier (Arkport area) last weekend had NO movement or sign and I hunted 20 hours in 2 1/2 days. 5 guys saw 2 deer and we all hunted hard. Up here I see deer every day and have passed on 10 bucks. My 13 year-old is usually in stand next to me watching which makes it fun and harder because of scent. He'll be out with bow next year. Haven't hunted in 4 days as my wife is out of town (killing me...I have the jones to get to the woods). I hunted every day of bow last year. Click on link for the HALLOWEEN BUCK.

I got a decent doe, not huge, but not tiny. I missed a really nice 8 opening morning. I figured out why my stand has been slow lately, someone that started hunting a ways up the tract from me stuck a doe and never tracked her, shes laying dead and half eaten by the critters about 25 yards from my stand. I do some hunting up off of Ballantyne Rd sometimes, just havent gotten up there this year yet. Hopefully I will see something this weekend as it will be it for me for bow. Im hoping that carcass will be gone before long, the scavengers have gotten it about half gone in 3 or 4 days, so it should be just some bones and leg fur to get rid of soon. Thats a great buck by the way!

anyone hunt long island

Postby BuckO » Thu Jan 31, 2008 9:15 am

I'm LI born and raised... only hunted it once though. Lots of scrub oak, briar thickets and LOADS of TICKS. Hunted on a tree farm in Eastport with permission. I hunt upstate NY mainly Catskill Region, Southern Tier, but I know there are some massive bucks taken on the Island every year. State or county land is hard to come by out there.

Long Island hunter. Ticks...huge racked deer and small body (from what I've seen) But they are there. Also the fact that archery is until Dec 31 and Shotgun goes from Jan 7 I think to Jan 30 is nice as well.

Postby saponi » Sun Nov 30, 2008 6:36 pm

The biggest problem in NY is the amount of land that is posted. You have to do alot of knocking on doors here.

I've not had a lot of luck with the door knocking to be honest.

Deer

Postby eggy » Fri Dec 05, 2008 4:38 pm

I am from the Tioga county NY area. After not hunting for several years I started again this year. My son is now 12 and loves hunting. I went hunting 16 out of 21 days this year for deer and am not seeing ANYTHING. A friend of mine shot a coyote. It had a tag on it. On the tag it had a phone number, so he called it. It was a dog breeded. He looked up the number and sure enough it was one of his. He then said an insurance company bought a bunch of his dogs. So they must have let them go in the wild. Is this what hunting is turning out to be? Pretty sad!!!! :x
