Anyone hunt Red Fox

For those of us who enjoy the pursuit of the little critters too.

Anyone hunt Red Fox

Postby mheath » Thu Dec 18, 2008 10:51 am

I lease a farm in Maryland and on the opening day of the shotgun season I saw 5 different red fox. I have a .223 ruger bolt action that I have been trying to kill a coyote with and I am going to try for some fox.

I have a electronic call that I attempt to call in coyotes with and I do mean attempt because in about 10 days hunting I only called in 1 gray fox which of course I missed.

Any ideas? do you think you can bait them in?

I saw tons of fox and bobcat tracks today in the snow. Any scents you recommend?

When calling for yotes, fox, coons etc I dont use lure or bait. Night calling is more productive too. At night I prefer a 12ga. Daytime or open area calling a rifle works better. .223/5.56 is a good varmint caliber. Yotes are smart, if theres been any hunting pressure they can be very shy and reclusive. Decoy's work and we've been using them more and more the last few years.

I wish we could hunt red fox. The only legal way to harvest a red fox in Alabama is by trapping one, but i'd sure love to have a fox mount.

Then trap one Alabama. They arent too hard to catch and I think you'll get hooked on trapping them. Trapping license, 1/2 doz 1 1/2 coils, 6 stakes/drags, dirt sifter, lure and some bait. You could get into it for less then $75.
