I think it is capable of taking down a deer, but me personallywould prefer a larger caliber. THe minimum I will hunt with is a .243. You will also need to check with your states regs to see if it is legal to harvest deer with this caliber.

223 hunting deer

Postby hawkdriver55 » Fri Oct 27, 2006 8:35 am

I have killed 2 deer with 223s. A 7 point buck with a bushmaster and a Doe with a mini 14. My wife killed a big Doe this week with her mini 14.

Never lost a deer while shooting a 223.

No matter what negative comments you hear about killing deer with a 223 it comes down to this.......IT WORKS!!! Knew a guy in Alaska that took a moose with a CAR15. (5 rounds through the shoulder, FMJ rounds)

Know your limits and your rifles limits.

YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HIT WHAT YOUR AIMING AT.

DON'T SHOOT IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE.

All the deer my wife and I have taken with 223s have been with 55gr soft points. Once it hits a bone it destorys everything around it about the size of a baseball. Shoot for the spine or right through the heart. Try to keep your shots under 75 yards. If you have to shoot longer ranges than this..........get a bigger cal. rifle.

Remember deer are just North American wild goats.

Don't believe the hype.

Good luck.....shoot straight......and have fun.

Just make sure your state allows .223's to be used. You will also want to see what type of ammo can be used. A lot of states dont allow the use full metal jacket(FMJ) ammo for deer or other wildlife.

Illegal here. Wouldn't be my choice anyway if it was. Poachers choice around here is a .22 long rifle to the head.

Here inKy it so not legal to hunt with a 223,the smallest cal. allowed is a 243 and if you are caught hunting with a 223 its bye bye to your gun, hunting licence and truck. But on the other hand it is hello to...a big ticket...a hefty fine and the big reward, being a guest at the county greybar motel for several months. So be smart and check with your local fish and wildlife office to find out if you can legally hunt in your state with a 223 FMJ.
