Does anybody use a Browning BAR for deer hunting? I've read a lot of good reviews on it, but what do you think of it?

BAR

Hey Buckbuster,

I have two insights for you on this one. My Cousin-in-Law..lol who hunts with me in the rifle season in Ontario every year uses a BAR Safari with the boss system and has ever since he started hunting with us years ago. He absolutely loves the gun and would not trade it for anything. I wouldnt either if I was him becuase the gun is a tackdriver and he always manages a deer or two with it. That one is chambered in 30-06 and having fired it personally it is a smooth operating machine with minimal recoil and fast follow up shots...just in case :). Also as long as I can remember it has never jammed.

Myself I have always been a Remington man. I've been using a model 742 semi in 308 for a number of years and love the gun but it has its problems and has cost me a deer or two that should have been meat in the freezer. So this year I purchased the BAR Short Trac in 300wsm and I've taken it out to the range and put it through its paces. As I'm sure other BAR owners would tell you comes as no surprise to them, the gun is very accurate, very smooth action, and the felt recoil although a little heavy for targets all day is never a problem when there is something at the other end with a nice set of horns.

All in all I am very happy with my purchase and cannot wait for November to put it to the test in real time. Even asthetically the gun is a beaut. My only complaint would be the hinged floorplate mags but I guess I'll get used to changing those with practice. Just used to the drop out of a Remmy. Hope this was what you were looking for.

Cheers,

My dad has a .308 BAR without the BOSS. He's killed dozens of deer with it and never had a problem. I have killed a few deer with it. They're nice rifles but I'm a bolt action fan myself. The automatics tend to not group as tightly as a bolt action but it's not enough to affect you in a hunting situation unless you're taking shots past 350 yards or so.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.

I have the newer Browning Bar (lightweight) model that just came out a few years ago, mines in the 270Win.

Mine is suprisingly accurate, we've all heard the stories about semi autos not being as accurate as a bolt action and its generaly true but I also have a Browning A-Bolt in 7mmRem Mag and this Bar is just as accurate and maybe even better due the 270's lower recoil.

I shot a whitetail buck with the Bar last year and he went down like he was struck by lightning. I hit him in the (heart lung area) using 150Gr Fed Prem Nosler Partition ammo.

Later I had to go back to my blind and I paced it out from the deer going back in a line at 423 steps and I concentrated on making sure the strides were long and consistent so i'm confident it was at least 400 yds.

Great little deer rifle.

Browning makes a very fine rifle. I had a Browning 25-06 orderd when I bought my Ruger 270. There was a shipping strike on at the time so thats why i bought the Ruger. I would not shy away from purchasing one.
