Ballistically Speaking (Slug gun hunters)

Postby Bone_Collector » Thu Sep 16, 2010 5:40 pm

I have a slug barrel for my 12 gauge that i bought after last season. I have not had a chance to sight it in and sabots are expensive. I bought 4 boxes and I am going this Saturday to sight it in.

I bought the 3" sabot slugs, because they were out of 2 3/4" and i wanted to get it done before bow season. I have 6 or 7 regular 3" slugs (Rem Sluggers not sabots) which i was told you can shoot the regular slugs out of the rifled barrel, but not the sabots out of the regular barrel. Could i use the regular slugs to get on target then switch over to the sabots or will this not work?

Also I asked this before, but if i sight the barrel (cantilever) and want to switch the regular barrel back on will it cause me to be off?

Somebody gave you some bad info. Yes, you can shoot rifled slugs from a rifled barrel, but you won't like the results. You would be lucky to get consistent groups. A rifled barrel is made to shoot sabot slugs. You spent the money for a rifled barrel, cantilever mount, and that was expensive. You now have a set-up for your shotgun that will give you the best performance. Why skimp on the proper ammo? Take the sluggers back and buy 3 boxes of different sabot slugs. Sight the gun in at the range you plan to hunt. Sure, sabots are expensive, but they are the most important piece of the shooting system. Once you find which sabot is the most ACCURATE from your gun, use those and only those. Forget about 3 inch slugs. The only thing you'll get from those are a sore shoulder. And yes, you can take your cantilever barrel off without losing your zero.
