barnes expander bullets

Postby bambeklr » Fri Jun 03, 2005 10:52 pm

I was wondering if anyone has tried the barnes expander all copper bullets. I use them in my shotgun in 3/4 oz and in my 7mmmag. I use the 160 grain x-bullet. They are a really well shooting bullet and the knock down is unbeleivable. I just wanted to share my experiences with them and let you all know they are worth the money. I have never shot anything like them and wont shoot anything else from now on. I even shoot them out of my muzzloader in 300grain. They leave holes the size if soda cans. The deer never go to far.

BARNES X RULE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby Honkey » Wed Jun 08, 2005 6:50 pm

:D I LOVE barnes X !! They are all that I use now. I have been reloading for 8 years now and have been hunting for 15 +. I have used Nossler, and rem core locks with decent results.
I used Barnes X in Africa twice the last time was 1 1/2 years ago in Tanzania. I took 13 animals with 15 shots and most of them fell so fast that Ray Charles could of tracked them. I use 200 g Barnes X in my 300 win and the 500 g x and Barnes solids in my 458 win mag. I am also using 300g x in my muzzleloader but I have not shot anything with it yet.

I recovered 1 solid 458 from a cape buffalo and one x bullet. The solid weiged exactly 499.73 grains after firing and the only wear in it was rifling marks. This solid was shot up the buffs arse as he was running away, it broke his pelvis and was recovered under the skin in his neck. This was the second shot .The first shot was with a barnes x through the shoulder and I recovered it under the skin on the opposite shoulder, the bullet was flared out in a petal just like the adds show. Amazing it weighed exactly 500g.

I have shot over 35 animals from deer and coyote to Kudu and zebra and hyena with the 300 win with barnes x 200g however I have never recovered one bullet. They always exit usually leaving a hellacious exit wound.

If you forced me to say something bad about barnes it would be that they do wreck alot of meat in comparason to other bullets. But I would rather wreck some meat than loose an animal.

barnes x

That they do but I can burger that part since there is no lead shrapnel. I have shot alot of deer with my thompson center black diamond XR and that 300gr bullet. I never yet have had and exit wound smaller then a tennis ball sometimes larger if you hit bone. I shot a doe in the head one time walking away from me. You talk about a mess. I shoot 150grains of powder out of that gun. Not lost on yet with it. I shot and 8 point in maryland this past year with my 7mm mag at 350yds free hand. That barnes x did threw the dirt on the old boy. I absolutly love them. You couldnt make me switch. Have you seen the giant bruise under the deers hide from the concussion. I had some deer that were bruised the size of a basket ball and larger. Luckily I try to shoot the does behind the shoulder to decrease meat loss.

barnes bullets

I just cant get over the 100% weight retention. They always open and stay together. It would be worth your money. I did hear some people have litle trouble getting the 300gr bullet down there barrels, but other than that they shoot great and just lay it to the animals. I killed a nice wild boar in south carolina, hit him right behind the ear and exited his left eye. Also killed a coyote at 130yds. I have video of that, if you saw what that bullet did to that thin skinned dog it would be illegal. The taxadermist did a great job. That made me a beleiver. They open like a flower everytime and the knock down is unbeleivable.

Hey Irish I am not sure about the 6.5 but I imagine that if you go to there website and go to contact us they would answer your questions, And yes they are the most effective bullet I have ever used. Extremly devastating to critters. I would even buy them in .22 caliber I love these things so much.

I'm considering trying them in my new 22-250 for deer. (From my new Savage 12FV varmint rifle.)Mostly for shooting them from my parents house. It is in the middle of hayfields and corn fields. Even if the deer ran 300 yards I would be able to see it entire time. It just seems like they are too good to be true though....In the woods I'll stick with something heavier for now.

Here in Ohio we can only use shot guns for deer hunting. I have been using the federal barns expander sabot in my H & R (New England) ultra slugger single shot with much success. Have also heard good reviews from hunting buddies with the same gun using a hornaday sabot, but for me the barns is the stuff.
Happy Hunting,
