Best .270 ammo?

Postby JakeO » Thu Nov 19, 2009 10:54 am

i just bought a savage .270 package. i live in florida and i am just starting to get into deer hunting. i sighted it in with 130gr federal core shoks i think, the cost about 17 bucks at wal-mart.

does anyone have an opinion on the best type of ammo to use for my situation (grain, point, brand etc...)? and prefferably under 30$?

IMO .270 with the ballistic tip is the best round for that model

I shoot 130 gr. Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip.. I tried the cheap ammo at the local walmart and I could not group with them. The winchester cost me around $35/box.

How big was the group for the ammo you shot??? If it is a decent group(1-1.5"), then I would say you found the right ammo.

What most people dont understand is that it isnt the ammo that makes the gun shoot good, its the gun that makes the ammo shoot good. Your rifle will tell you what it likes. It may be a $17 box of ammo or it may be a $40 box of ammo. If what you have now doesnt shoot good, then buy something else and try that. You might nail it on the first brand/bullet weight, it may take you 5 different brands/weights. My .270 shot 130gr boolits into 2" groups, which I was happy with. I then changed to a different brand(140gr) and it shot them into 1" or less groups. Thats what I ended up going with until Jan of this year when I started reloading.

First, I had the brand from wal-mart ( Only one they had for the .270 caliber , so I went to the range to sight it in, shot the entire box and still had 3 1/2" groups.. I had the rife on a mount... so I ran to the local gun shop and got my old brand which was the ballistic ammo, and got it grouped within 1" of each other. Very happy with that. Thinking of trying the Remington brand, a little cheaper. $35/box and I knock my rifle often so I'm always at the range.

Invest in a better scope and you wont have to worry about it getting knocked out. I have a Leupold on my Ruger 96/44 lever action and it is my truck gun. It stays in the truck year round, bouncing around in the floor board. It is on target every time I pull it out of the truck and shoot it. I did pay some jing for it, but it is worth it in the long run.

well its hard to say, being that this was my first scoped rifle, and the first time i had ever shot through a scope, it took me a while to sight it in. being in college, i am completley broke. i know that you are supposed to group your shots, but i pretty mush just left the range as soon as i hit dead on the bull at 100yrds cus i used 19 out of my box of 20. my last 6 shots were within a 5 inch group, and i soon as i hit it dead on i really just did not have the money to buy another box, so i left. but i am fairley confident that it would group well.

also, what is IMO .270?

I like a .270. You get a nice trajectory for long range shots and its effective at that distance and also up close. The last time I looked, you could get 85-160gr bullets which will cover almost every animal in North America.

I have several 1 shot kills with the Hornady 130 gr SST.
I'm a fan of the "impact shot"!

I use remington bronze points in 130 grain. They never let me down. 2 of the 3 deer I have shot this year dropped in their tracks and the other one ran about 20 yards with a hole big enough to put both my fist in.

If you are shooting deer, either the Winchester Silvertip or Remington Cor-lokt or Bronzepoints can be had in reasonably priced factory ammo.

If you are after blacks or elk, go the Nosler Partition in Federal Premium, or Barnes-X. They'll give you better penetration on difficult angles with these larger creatures, but will not put down a deer any faster than the regular stuff.

Winchester 140gr Accubond CSX 2 are outstanding rounds through my Ruger. Winchester also has an online ballistics computer that you can check out like 7 diffrent rounds and calibers at one time,,i spend a lot of time with that lately.
