Best rifle for youth

Postby tmckinney » Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:21 pm

I am needing help picking a youth rifle. The youth .243 models have to much kick and he is not sold on the full size .243.

Any ideas on what is best? I am thinking about .223 or 22-250????

You can look into some reduced recoil loads for the .243 or possibly look into a .30-30. If you choose a .223 or .22-250, make sure it is legal with you DNR/Wild life Services.

My vote would be for the 30/30 also.

Let us know what happens. As mentioned earlier,,,make certain that whatever rifle you use meets state laws.

Can't beat a Marlin .30-30 lever action cowboy rifle.

Remington makes some nice youth sized bolt guns. Get him something good he can use for awhile.

No just for shooting. In my experience a .223 is a good rifle to shoot before you get into bigger caliber rifles. I shot hundreds of rounds through a .223 before I started shooting my .35 at age 14 which is what I use for deer now.

IMO, you can take a deer with any firearm, its all about shot placement. BUT, I wouldnt go and shoot a deer with any caliber. My home state of Tennessee had a minimum caliber of .24 for deer until about 2 years ago and now you can hunt deer with any center fire caliber. That includes the little .22 Hornet, to small!! I think the .22 cals are to small for deer period, but to each his own. If you buy the right bullet for it, it does a number on deer.

If it was my choice and I was getting a rifle for my starting hunter(child, woman, adult), it would be the .243 Win or the 6mm Rem. If they can take the recoil of a .223, they can handle a .243/6mm and it can and will shoot up to 300yds+ and kill deer at that distance.

When my brother and I were younger, our dad had a really nice, accurate .223 that he let my brother learn on. One evening, he sat with our dad and I was off doing my own thing. Dad left him in the blind and went off to do something, tell him that if he sees a deer, shoot it.

Later that evening we ended up having to field dress two does he'd shot. Following directions. We learned alot from our dad....mostly what NOT to do, heh.

I got a .308 for Christmas last year and I'm thinking about outfitting it for my 7(soon to be 8) year old daughter for next season. We have a little Ruger .22 I set up for her to target shoot and she took to it like a duck to water. Very careful and patient...I mean, the perfect little hunter. This is her first season so the deal was that she had to sit and spot and prove she could handle all the other stuff with hunting (being quiet, not getting bored, etc) and we'd work on a good rifle in the off season. so far so good.

I'm thinking the .308 would be good for her. My younger sister came up with one and my brother still has his he started using as a teenager. It my kick a little, we'll try it and if that's a little much (my daughter is very petite) we'll go with a .243 or see if my dad still has the .223.

That would be a good one. I am in the process of aquiring a .257 Wby Mag and it has very little recoil... IMO. Only problem with it is the cost of ammo. I will be reloading for it, so that cuts my costs in half or better and its "custom fitted" to my rifle.
