I used to live in the mountains of Virginia, and heard stories of black panthers in the area. I later found out they were mountain lions with black hair. Not that I would want to meet one first thing in the morning on the way to my stand.LOL.

I have seen them a couple of times in South Carolina. Thought and even told folks they were crazy when they told me they had seen them....then I saw one! If you do see one in the woods, just yell BOOO! and it will run like you poured scalding hot water on it. Big cats are generally only a problem when they have to live in fairly highly populated areas such that they are around people so much that they lose their fear of humans.

Back when they hung horse theives, there wasn't a lot of horse thievin' going on.

I saw one in Van Etten N.Y. in the 1975 or 76.
Then it was seem by others and the newspapers of the area labeled it The Van Etten Swamp monster.
It was not monster at all, probably around 120 pounds and inhabited a swampy area.

black panther

Postby redhawk22660 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 3:50 pm

dont know about black panthers but last years deer season (2008), in the blue mountian in linden va a hunter saw 3 mountian lions and got photos that was confermed and posted in the local news paper. i hunt in that mountian range, tho there not meny of them around, there is some. a long knife, is a good idea , as well as thick pants and coat. i also use knee high boots,,,,,lots of bear in those mountians too. not a place for the weak at heart hunters, its a wild place to be in...
a wise hunter is one that knows his/her limints , and one who will not kill needlessly.

There are stories of "Black Panthers" and Mountain Lions all over the place on the east coast. 99% of them are either unconfirmed or have been found to be escaped "pets". There has been no wild or free roaming population of Mountain Lions in the east in a very long time. The only cats east of the Mississippi larger than a Bobcat or Lynx would be the Florida Panther, which is a subspecies of Mountain Lion.

I never believed they were around either but i have seen 2 in north east wisconsin over the last 3 years. One of them i saw mid day just strolling across a hay field as if it were back in the jungle. hahaha

My Ranch is MLD and every year we do a buck survey in a helicopter and in 2009 we counted 100 mountian lions in a 200 acre Radius.
