Bow limb makes noise when drawing

Postby DouglasSpear » Sun Aug 09, 2009 12:42 pm

I've noticed a creaking noise on what I believe is one of my bow limbs (top one) when drawing back. It's almost as if the limb settles after no movement for so long because after the first draw and it makes the noise, it doesn't do it unless it sits for a while. (Example: it makes the noise on the first draw back when I practice but then won't make the noise again until the first draw on my next practice session a few days/weeks later). Does anyone have any idea what might cause this or experienced this themselves? The limbs don't appear to be damaged, splintered, or warped, and I have limb savers on.

Maybe get someone to stand next to the bow when you draw it to see if they can pinpoint where its coming from.

Could be if you've laid the bow down on the ground that you've got dirt in a cam or limb pivot.

creaking noise

Douglas - did you ever figure out how to stop the noise? I have exactly the same thing - lower limb creeks when I draw.

If you can't figure out and fix the problem yourself. You might want to take it to a bow shop, just to make sure its nothing serious.

It could be several things. I would start checking the limb pocket, pivot points, any and all plastic(teflon) washers, cracks in the limbs, look to see if any of the metal clips are missing from the pins holding the cams, etc. What I'm saying is start where the limbs attach to the riser and work your way out.

How old is the bow??? I know that after a certain age or certain number of shots, you need to replace the limb pockets. If that is the case, contact the manufacturer and let them know what you need. They should take care of you.

Thanks everyone. I think it may be the limb pocket. It's definitely in the limb and not on any of the cams or pins. Dang technology  I never had this problem with the recurve. Anyway, the bow is a PSE Nova which I purchased from someone about 5 or 6 years ago for $100. It's been great for my first compound bow, but I think after this season during the spring sale, I might buy a new bow. I am trying to get my brother in law into hunting and I might just give it to him and allow him to fix it up if he wants - its still in shooting condition, there is no physical damage. If I really wanted to keep it, the only things I'd do to it is put new sights on it, replace the string, and now that limb pocket. But I would like a new bow as well as make the switch to carbon arrows anyway.

Same here - except its an old Bear. I'm hoping to get one more season out of it and upgrade to a PSE. I will get it checked out to be sure it's safe. Thanks.
