Broken Antlers...Can they be repaired

Postby Chasinwhitetails01 » Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:02 am

I have a question for all the taxidermist. Earlier this season, I shot a buck running out the field with the rifle. It was dumb to shoot him running in the first place, but anyway..i put the crosshairs on his shoulder and i guess i squeezed off as he was coming down from leaping. im not real sure..but i hit the deer right in the back of the head and split the skull. (300 WSM is not real good for a head at 150 yds.)

Can that be fixed for a mount. Im certainly hoping it can be...The deer is an 8 Pointer 18 1/2 in wide inside..140 range.

Heck, I've seen sheds that were made into a mount, using a different cape. I'm sure a qualified taxidermist could affix what's left of the skull plate and antlers and put it on to a mount. Might need a new cape, of course...depending on how damaged the original is?

Yes it can be fixed,,,make sure to ask the taxidermist if he has done such thing before though. You may have to find someone that can or will take another deer for the skull and cape though.

If the cape is not salvageable , measure corner of eye to tip of the nose and around the neck at base of skull, there are usually several capes available on e-bay, just search deer capes, you can probably find one the same size. I'm sure any taxidermist with much experience would be glad to fix you up.
