Browning 270 WSM

Postby samsc03 » Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:57 am

Hey everybody just lookin for opinions on what everybody thinks. Alright last summer i bought my dad a new a-bolt 30-06 synthetic stalker. I have fallen for this gun now. I shoot a BAR 30-06 now and like it but it is almost time for the mantle. So i want an a-bolt or maybe a BAR synthetic stalker in something that shoots flatter and faster. Don't get me wrong this gun is a killer but it gets out shot at the range on weekends by these guys with the new magnum 270's and 300's. I know they have the about same knock down as the 30-06 but are faster and flatter that i have seen. Don't like the idea of getting away from what has worked for me but sometimes it is for the better.Let me know what ya'll think?

I've got a .300WSM Winchester M70 and love it. It was accurate right out of the box and doesn't kick much worse than my 30.06. My buddy has a A-bolt in the .270 and loves it just as much. If you're not shooting over about 350 yards though, the old -06 will do just fine, at least it has for me.

thanks for the reply. I had a .270 remington 7400 that i had problems with(reliability during repeating shots)constantly and was a little unsure of the calibers stoutness.Ended up missing a buck of a lifetime with it after jamming on second shot and also could not get it accurate worth a damn. After inheriting the BAR from my dad that i now hunt with i have become more knowledgeable on deer calibers it seems and a .270 is what a lot of deer hunters prefer. These new calibers to me are very tempting but i am now narrowing it down to another 30-06 or .270 wsm. The thing about the short magnum is it is more expensive to purchase and is probably expensive to shoot compared to what i am used to. The other reason i am leaning towards getting another 30-06 is that i have been told by my range buddies that i can make up for the larger projectiles slower speed than that of a .270 by shooting a lighter grain bullet and then saving more deer for the table. i shoot a 180 grain winchester supreme now and am thinking about trying the 165 grain bullet and see what it is like but i won't know what i am gonna do for sure until i get done with my current deer season and my reliable old trusty hits the mantle.

I shoot the 165 Win Ballistic Silvertip out of my .06 --- they shoot straight, and the farthest I've taken a deer with them was 347 yds. No problem. The 7400 you mentioned was definitely a gun problem, not the cartridge. A .270 will do just about anything the .06 will do, the only real difference is that with the .06 you can use heavier bullets if you decide to hunt something bigger than whitetails. :)

Thanks for the reply again. If i don't hang my BAR up after this season i will definitely make a move to the 165 gr. Are those the cxp 1 or the cxp 2?I was told that the lighter bullet will make my automatic rifle more accurate as well as make it last for a little while longer. What do you think?By the way nice shot.

I believe they're CXP 2, but I'm not certain. The lighter bullet may not be more accurate in your gun. Some rifles just like some loads better than others. My .06 will routinely keep those 165's in an inch at 100yds, but doesn't shoot Hornady shells into less than 3 inches. It just doesn't like that brand. Experiment with different weights and different ammo manufacturers until you find the one that your rifle likes the best. 8)

Thanks once again and the info is what i wanted to hear. When i was shopping for my hunting gear at the start of the prep season i could not find the silvertips in anything other than the 180's.At the range before season the gun was goin all over the paper(could vary as much as 3 inches)from shot to shot. That is when somebody started asking ?'s.The gun is very old but still reliable but the guy talking to me thought that i should try the lighter bullet to make it more accurate. He said that because he has always believed that 30-06 autos shoot better with something lighter than the 180's cuz the moving parts involved in the receiver of the auto. In theory it makes since but then again i do not always go with what people suggest. That is why i am asking here and a few other places. The 180's worked fine for me so far in the field this year and i won't change till next year.
