Looking for advice on a new rifle. Ive shot 7mm rifles mainly, but have heard from many different people that its not sufficient enough. I was planning on switching over to 30-06 with a rifle from savage, but I wanted to get some other peoples insight. Heres a link of the rifle i was planning on buying: http://www.savagearms.com/111f.htm

thanks guys...

not sufficient enough for what? i think a 7mm will do anything you want except elk, moose, bear. maybe small bear. but its always good to have different cal./rifles.

savage shoots sweet

Postby carnivore » Sat Feb 26, 2005 8:58 am

I bought .243 in rem and savage for my son and I and the savage is a lot more smoother all around in and out of the magazine the bolt action is smoother and the trigger pull is sweet. when ever the money is right for any rifle purchase , for me it'll be savage from here on out.

Hey Craig - if you're hunting deer, the 7mm's will do most anything you need 'em to. The 7 RemMag, 7WSM, 7-08, 7x57, all are more than enough to take down the biggest buck. But if you just want to branch out and try another caliber, I've always loved the 30's. I've got a 30.30, .308, 30.06, and a .300WSM and love 'em all. The old naught six is probably the most versatile caliber around, you can find ammo for it anywhere, and it'll take everything from coyotes to moose with the right loads. :)

That's plenty !!!!

My 1st "deer rifle" was a Rem 7mm Mag. Like so many, I bought into the "bigger is better" hoo ha. I am not saying they don't have their place, but I am saying that for 90% of us, it is MORE than enough. It only took of couple of years of getting pounded by that monster for me to figure out that if all you want to do is shoot a few rounds a year then ok. But if you really want to shoot and shoot and shoot.... then there are better choices. I bounced around some and shot some 30 cals and the ever popular .243 and found out that they will all kill those little woods rats with no trouble at all. After much research, I finally settled on a 25-.06 and shoot everything from prairie dogs out to 400 plus yards (85 gr. ballistic silvertip @ 3500fps) to big Missouri whitetails (115 gr. ballistic silvertip @ 3000fps). Rarely to they take more than a step if shot cleanly. This is a wonderful weapon to have in your arsenal to handle that area of varmints on up to whitetails. It has virtually no recoil and is a good weapon for women and kids as they enter the picture. By the way, I'll always have my 7mm and if that bear ever comes along ....................... I'll shoot him with my bow.

A buddy of mine had a bad flinch from one of those. His Dad had started him out on one. He's in his late 20's now. When he first started shooting with me I was seeing it and mentioned it, he told me then what the deal was. Got him to shooting the 38-55 loaded down to blackpowder velocites and he does pretty well now.

caliber questions

Postby bambeklr » Sun Feb 27, 2005 5:19 pm

Hey there bud a 7mm mag is enough gun for almost anything but safari hunts, and I am not sure if it wouldnt work for that. I hunt with a 7mm mag browning A bolt with the boss system. Its a cannon. In my opinion its to much for deer. Any gun you leave a 2 foot blood clot under the hide with is to much.

The 30-06 is a great caliber. I also use it in maryland for deer. It is very versitile because of the loads you can give it. I personally think it is a perfect deer rifle because of there thin skin. Good luck!!!

 If you want to get someone off that 7mm flinch as I used to call it then just make the 2nd biggest mistake I have made in awhile.

I shot turkeys for years and years with a Mossburg 20ga. and a long long full choke barrel. A "buddy" talked me into getting a Mossburg 835 12 guage that shoots 3 and a half inchers.
We jumped a couple dozen Canadas the fisrt time I used it. We sneaked up a pond damn and blasted them as they took off from the water. The initial impact severed my spinal column from my brain stem and I just watched the rest of the show from the ground. Talk about a whacker. Just shoot this baby a couple of times and the 7mm ain't jack!!

I happen to have one with all 3 chokes and has been shot 5 times. If anyone is interested just make me an offer. ( I did shoot if again to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, but I swear it's had only had 5 rounds fired through it cause that is all that came in the pack I bought.)

7mm flinch

well I shoot a 870 pump all duck seaqson with 3 1/2 inch #2's. It does kick but I am used to it. I also have a browning bps 10 gauge. It only shoots 3 1/2 inch shells. I use it driving deer sometimes. You talk about kick. I use 00Buck and slugs.
