I would definately try it. If there isnt anything like cows or hogs to eat it up I would like to try it. Plus you would not have to worry about filling your feeder or some youha stealing your feeder. My ? though is when is the best time to put your plot out?

Clover is a fantastic food plot and relatively cheap depending on how big you want to make it. The only problem I have ever had with it is the deer mow it down pretty quick if you don't plant a big enough area. You extention agent should be able to tell you the best times to plant it in your area.

Deer love clover, on a nice sunny summer day i like to take trips out to our hunting land (5miles outta town) and always see the summer bucks tearing up the clover fields. Always a good crop for whitetails...

I planted my first two food plots this year. Whitetail Institutes EXTREME, which is clover and chicory. Ill post pictures in a couple weeks. Needless to say, they were only 1/8 acre plots and they look phonomenal. Whether the deer are really using them much, im not sure. I set up trailcams over each of them last trip up to the cabin and will check them in a couple weeks.

Clover Experience...

Postby Al Barrs » Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:38 pm

Deer love white clover. I have crimson clover in my pecan orchard but deer seem to prefer the grass. My experience with clover is that it is a good spring crop but is gone by hunting season. Like minerals it is seasonal. And, it is more difficult to plant and germinate than other plot seed. And, I find the cost of seed rather high priced in my area.

The main thing to growing clover is getting the ph right in your soil. Liming is most important thing with clover.
The white clovers that will grow year round is the best that I have found for wildlife....chickasaw blend, oceola & durand have been good for me.

I planted a food plot on the land I hunt with the owners permission but it was on a hilltop and the soil was just too dry and it never got the proper water with the drought we've had this year. If I had a dream food plot with 2 different types of crop it would be clover and soy beans. I think it's obvious through all the testing, pictures, and hunting results, deer love clover.
