Cold Weather Tip

Postby DocHolladay » Wed Dec 22, 2004 6:21 pm

i dont know how many have tried this but, i imagine there are some who havent. when its cold out or going to get cold, i take a military sleeping bag with me. once i get in the stand or the blind i get in the sleeping bag to stay warm, boots and all. dont zip it all the way up or youll have a hard time getting out without spooking the deer. i usually zip it to my waist and stop there. you can wrap it around you if its really cold. also dont put your scope in the bag with you or it will fog up when you bring it out. you also want to keep it scent free. i usually hang it outside. sometimes i wash it in scent-a-way. hope this helps you cold whether hunters.
happy huntin

Some tips we learned -

1. Put hot hands in your boots. Around your Kidneys. Wear a warm hat.
Use comfortable gloves that have deer skin palms and thinsulate.

2. Wear your clothes in layers. Buy the best hunting clothes you can afford.

3. Buy the best boots - you can afford. A $1000 gun - won't do you no good if you aren't out there hunting. I saw some really nice Rocky's today - 1200 grams of thinsulate. And they were smaller than the Bear Claws I now use. Lighter too!

4. If you have a long walk to your hunting spot. Wear a light pair of boots - on your walk. Then put a heavy pair of boots on when you get to your stand. We sometimes leave our Ice Kings in a plastic bag - near our deer stands - with hot hands inside them to keep them warm all night while we are back at base camp. Keep's them from freezing up.

Learned that while hunting one year in Colorado. It never got above 0* for two weeks.
