confidence level in RAGE broadheads

Postby yokelokie » Thu Sep 23, 2010 11:03 am

I have always used Thunderheads with great results. I tried a top-selling expandable a few years ago and lost 2 of the 5 deer I shot that year(one did not even open up). So I went back to Thunderheads the last couple of years with continued and predictable success. My wife got me some Rage broadheads(2 blade) for Christmas last year. I want badly to try them, but I'm still sceptical. I'm an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy. What do you guys think? Should I try out the sleek and sexy new girl, or dance with the one who brung me?

I don't care for mechanical broadheads. I like fixed and they too work for me. You said it, "if it aint broke, don't fix it."

I would carry at least one because she got them for you. I will say that I think the Rage are over rated, BUT I have seen numerous deer killed with them and they leave BIG HOLES!!! I wouldnt buy them, but if they were a gift, I would use them just from the pics and fisrt hand exposure I have seen.
Curiosity killed the cat, but I was a suspect for a while......

I've shot rage since they came out (the two bladers). If you clip the shoulder blade its not goin all the way through (I shoot a mathews Z7 at 70 lbs), however, the hole is soooooo devastating and the blood trails are soo awsome it just doesnt matter. I wouldnt shoot through real hard parts of the deer like down through the top of the back or a quartering to shot because the cutting diameter hurts the penetration through bone and dense mussle. I have had a couple buddys ponch deer and everytime its been lethal again due to the massive holes. I know what your saying about if it aint broke dont fix it in fact I used to be the same way. It wasn't until I started shooting archery league and what not that I tried the new bows, sites, and broadheads that I really gained an appreciation for how far technology has brought the archery world. Givem a try.

Around here Im starting to hear unfavorable things about the Rage's. Im biased too though as I shoot fixed blade but did try for about two seasons shooting mechanicals with dismal results at best. Noone in our group shoots expandables/mechanicals anymore either and several gave the Rage's a fair try last few seasons. We have about 25 "loose"members in our hunting group with all levels of experience. I believe in the KISS principle and also "if it aint broke dont fix it". Whatever you decide I wish you luck. Our most successful and usually most experienced hunters that kill deer approaching or surpassing double digits every year dont shoot much other then Muzzy's. Few use Magnus and Zwickey too.

I like the RAGE BROADHEADS, IN FACT I RECOMMMEND THEM. Great penetration and Nice holes for a kill'em quick approach to harvesting any animal. But don't take my advice or recommendation. I just know this as an experienced bow hunter.... it doesnt matter what broadhead you use at times if the shot angle and placement of the shot isn't right. another thing about the rage is my son who is 17 now has made some not so perfect shots and we have found all of them not to far away.

I understand what your saying, but I used Montecs for the longest time. They worked great every time then I had a little extra money to spend and being excited about the season i picked up some NAP blood runners. All the things that the Rage brings to the table but will not break if you hit bone and for the most part is all over tougher.

I've been using the Rage broadheads for a couple years now and I like them. They knock a huge hole and leave a excellent blood trail. But you can usually just get one kill then you have to replace the blades. I haven't lost anything I've shot yet (knock on wood). But if the wife bought them for you might as well use them on a hog or something in that nature and then base your decision. Good luck hunting.
