I had one i 243 I thought that I would like to have multiple barrells but it didn't shoot any better than any other rifle on the market. When shooting varmints the reload time takes away from the fun. I think that you see alot of hipe on the hunting channel about them since they are a sponsor. I can't say anything negative about them I just prefer bolt actions and repeaters

follow up shots

Postby carnivore » Fri Aug 12, 2005 3:28 pm

Savage makes practically the same handgun in a three shot bolt action. and some day I'd love to have one setup with a fold down stock. I witnessed a friend of mine out in delaware taking out a fox with a contender 25.06 and a fold down stock at around 250 yds. for the convienence of a short gun I'd take one over a long gun anyday.

Carni I hate to ask a stupid question but how is a 3 shot bolt action handgun almost the same as a single shot break open?

Did you not say that the accuracy wasn't any different from a rifle, and the reload time of the contender takes some of the fun out of varmit shooting. I just thought i'd suggest to you that a fella could get the follow up shot a lot quicker with the savage bolt action short gun therefore not taking the fun out of varmit shooting by having to inconvienence onesself with the single shot method.

Florida take a look at the Benelli R1 semi auto with recoil reduction built in a little pricey but a fine rifle. Carni as for a short wheel around gun Ruger makes the Compact m77 w/16 1/2 in barrell for about 200 less than the The Savage Striker and only weighs 1/4lb more. It is not so much an inconvience to work a single shot weapon as it is movement. Think about it when all you do is move you hand to work the bolt the rifle never leaves the rest as compared to Move the gun off the rest, Break the gun open, Extract the cartridge, Put another cartridge in, Close the gun, Readjust on the rest. Too much movement and you take your focus from your targets to the task of reloading

I look at it like if you like a challange you will probably like the Contender.
I have a Contender in I think 5 calibers and I love it also. Mine isn't the G2. I do like the recock feature that the new ones have, but it no longer has the adjustable trigger pull, mines has had a trigger job anyway even though it did. It also no longer comes in rimfire, it now can come to handle the 21" 44/70 barrel since it has the reinforceing.
I have thought abought getting an Encore, maybe going with a carbine this time. One thing about the Contender and the falling block is that you are able to fire rounds much hotter then then you can in most other arms ( if you stand to hold them that is and not all shoot the best that way). Some calibers are supposed to get near rifle balistics. The true benefits to the Contender come if you can reload. And some of the Wild cat loads I guess are awsome. Most of what I am shooting are standard calibers and most are for handguns, but since there is no gas escapeing through a cylinder gap or chamber the pressures are greatly increased even with factory ammo. Some of the rounds can pack quite a punch on both ends if your shooting a handgun.
At least for me, I can't take a 3 1/2 lb. handgun with a 10 or 14" barrel and scope and just pop off a 150 to 200 yard shot, I have to have it well braced. I need to practice fairly often too, it just does't take much of a flinch to throw it off a quite few inches.
I think the next one I would get would be 7mm08 and I know someone that has taken deer at over 250 and I believe with a 14" barrel, he did have it sandbagged.

So are you saying that when the gun is closed that the action is a tighter fit than any other gun handling the gas pressure of a high power cartridge? It may be stronger but not a better seal. They actually have the same chamber demensions, as that is caliber specific from the manufacturer. the neck and shoulder are critical. The expansion of the case when fired is what seals the chamber. Most of us that reload do not do it for magnum loading but rather for optimum performance from specific bullets.

florida the contender is a good weapon in anyone arsonal for deer . I own one in a 35 caliber it is excellent for hog and deer.I carry it as a side arm for deer huntin and primary for hog huntin. The recoil isnt bad and accuracy is excellent.I'd recommend it to anybody.

I have a SS Prohunter in 7mm rem mag, 243 and a 15'' 45/410 I have two action and love the gun. I am not a small game hunter'with this gun" but I think if you want more than one shot capablity get an auto loader rifle. I just sold a 15'' 243 just didn't like the feel all my shots have been on deer under 250yds and have been one shot kills....

I have a Pro Hunter 209x50. I love it yeah it is a single shot so what if you know what your doing all you need is one shot. I dropped an 8-point in it tracks at 175 yards last year. I just bought a .30 TC barrel and a .338 Win Mag. Can't wait to try them out. Pro Hunter in the way to go.

you Contender shooters have my vote,I like the little gun myself. But while reloading takes a little time, its more a kick knowing you built the round for the gun and can be more accurate that factory loads if you take the time to work up the load for the round you are shooting.Anyone can buy a box of ammo and go shoot, but to load it your self, knowing its the round you built that dropped that trophy buck has to be a feeling like no other.
Want my ammo?Ok,stand downrange.
