Coyote populations

Postby Ndicap12 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:44 pm

Ive seen 3 coyotes this season so far this season and ive only got out 3 times. Has anyone else seen an increase in coyotes? Also the one that i shot had deer hair and bones in it and it came in less than 5 minutes after using a doe bleat call. Im afraid that they are killing alot if deer that could result in a decrease in deer herds.

When I took my buck to the taxadermist, a guy brought 3 coyotes in. He said he shot a doe and they were gutting it and they came right in.

COYOTE POPULATIONS

Postby KMIZ » Mon Nov 30, 2009 4:54 pm

Ndicap12, I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM READING ON THE SUBJECT, I DON'T BELIEVE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH COYOTES KILLING YOUR DEER HERD. THEY SAY THAT A COYOTE IS NO MATCH FOR A HEALTHY DEER. EVEN IN SNOW THEY ARE ONE OF THE LAST ANIMALS A COYOTE WILL ATTEMPT TO CATCH AND KILL. I THINK YOU ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM ALL HUNTERS FACE AND THAT IS THAT SOMEONE WOUNDED A DEER AND NEVER RETRIEVED IT. THE COYOTE EITHER FINISHED IT OFF OR FOUND IT ALREADY DEAD AND STARTED TO FEAST ON IT. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO IS A MEMBER OF QDMA THEY HAD A REAL GOOD ARTICLE IN THERE MAGAZINE THIS LAST YEAR. IF YOU CAN GET A COPY, IT WAS QUITE ENLIGHTENING,KMIZ. 8)

You have a good point but you have to factor in that they can kill fawns and a pack of coyotes could kill a deer. I dont know to much about coyotes and deer but im definatly going to look into it thanks for the help! :D

KMIZ,

Coyotes do a number on fawns in the spring and summer. I know alot of guys here in western NY that are having big big problems with 'yotes killing many fawns. DEC needs to open the season year round on them with no bag limit.

just after we got all that snow in upstate ny i herd a pack yippin, went to check it out and they were eattin at something. i thought they were eatting a rabbit or w/e so i shot a yote with a .22lr (those stingers do a number on them) well i hate to say it but the fawn ive been watching this year is o longer around... so like said before in a pack they can do damage

2010 - 2011 Coyote hunting season

No bag limit this year ( I think it's been that way for some time now). In 3R and 3S, we've seen quite a few coyotes and they're starting to get into suburbia. There were two instance of attacks on children in 3S in the Spring 2010. Bronxville and Scarsdale have issued Coyote alerts this month. Rye has tried to "live with them" but there must be a balance. Right now, we are at the losing end of that battle. It's a good decision to open this coming season without bag limits.
