Cool pics. You need to explain something to me though. How is that there are pigs in the south. I mean wild hogs are not native to N.America. Are they just ferile pigs? because they don't even resemble the European version at all. I went once to visit some family in Florida once and they went hog hunting, this confused me a little. Please explain.

The hogs in Florida are in fact feral hogs. It is my understanding that they are descendants of pigs brought over by the Spaniards in the 1500's. Some must have escaped and began to multilply. I don't know about the rest of the country but down here a sow will normally have two litters a year of anywhere from 4 to 8 piglets. They are quite prolific. I have over 200 acres in North Central Florida and we just cant kill them fast enough (I wish our deer were this abundant). They destroy our food plots and do an unbelievable amount of damage to the timber. Last year I tried to plant corn in a food plot. They went through and rooted up every kernel. It looked like we had run a disc over the field again. The year before that I had tried Chufa and they never gave it a chance to sprout.

Still hunting for wild hogs is a load of fun and a great way to introduce youngsters to hunting. We put the kids in a treestand and it doesn't take long for a pig to walk by. Hunting hogs with dogs is a different story and certainly not for the weak of heart.

Thanks that actually makes a little sense to me. So they are actually more of a pest than anything else then. And I'm sure they have no real predators other than hunters, right.

Other than a very rare panther, there isn't much down here that will mess with the pigs. On private land they are considered livestock and can be hunted year round. However, on public land they are considered game and subject to the same seasons as deer. Either way they are a huge nuisance and impossible to eradicate.

Blade, In georgia we are allowed to hunt them on public land whenever ANY season is in, small game or big game as long as you are using a weapon that is legal for whatever season is in. I have killed more pigs in the spring time turkey hunting than I have at any other time of the year.

Yea,

I made a mistake, I took my shotgun into the woods (I rarely hunt with a gun because to be quite honest I am a lousy shot). I usually hunt with a bow. It was getting late in the morning and the turkeys had shut down and there was nothing to be heard. So I was working my way between several food plots when i discoved a herd(?) of pigs on one of my plots. All I had was some #5 shot so I eased my way along til I got about 10 yrds from them. By this time I was in the wide open but fortunately down wind. They were feeding toward me and I just stood there. They must have gotten within a couple of yards before i yelled "GIT". They were knocking each other down trying to run. It was the funniest sight. I know they are supposed to be smart but they must be practically blind. I was curious how close they would get and then realized I had let them get too close. It was all young sows and yearlings or I wouldn't have let them get in like that.

Hopefully it was in opposite directions.

I walked up on one, well I think it was one, several years ago while going to my stand in the dark one morning. There was alot of rustling and grunting going on in a thicket. It was either a hog or Doc with another hang over. :D

Either way, I left in a hurry. Both can hurt you if you are not careful!
