Postby JakeO » Sun Nov 16, 2008 4:57 pm

i am in the market for a new rifle and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas. i will mainly use it for target, deer and hog down here in FL. i need to stay in probly under 500$ range, and i am open to new or used. i had something like a 270 in mind, but any advice would be appreciated.

Ironhead is right, Walmart buys a large enough shipment of guns to stock all their stores at the same time so they get them at a discount from the manufacturers and they have some of the best prices you will find.

My Browning Bar in 270Win was about $100 cheaper at Walmart than anywhere else I priced it, I bought the scope and rings there also.

you might look at some older rem 700 rifles.i like the fit and finish better on the older ones and they are good shooters.id say 500 buks would buy a primo one with top quality optics.

Last year I bought a Browning A bolt synthetic stock used for $450 and a Leupold VariXIII 2.5x8 for another $175, both in excellent condition. i was pretty happy with my deal and it's an awesome shooting rifle combo.

Cabelas usually has the Remington 700 SPS rifles on sale. I think there was just a flyer out that had a nice rifle and scope combo for around $450 in several popluar calibers.

Hogs and deer in Florida under 150 yards and $500 I'd consider a SKS. Rifle $150-$200(cheaper if you shop around, got one for a buddy $100). Low power scope and mounting etc less then $75 total. Mines a coyote whomper and Ive taken yotes past 200 yards with it. Its almost idiot and fool proof. You could probably set two up for less then $500 and have alot of cash left for ammo. They are real popular in Missouri where the wifes clan dens up,lol.

Have you looked at the prices of SKS's lately? You cant hardly touch a good one for under $400. I have been to 2 gun shows lately and the lowest prices I saw were in the $300s and those were pretty beat up guns that have had a ton of rounds through them. The SKS isnt a cheap gun anymore like it used to be.

Aint that odd? They are still running $150ish around here. Highest place around is a local surplus store and hes still only charging $250-$300. he throws in a little cleaning kit, oiler etc. About two months ago I passed up two SKS's in Missouri that were $125 each, used but still servicable. Our Dunhams had an add about a month ago for $225. Now all of our ammo prices have increased, Big time! SOME OF IT 200%+. All centerfire rounds have went up at least 25%. Some shotgun shells 50%. .50 round balls were $8.99/100 last fall( I bought 2000 thank God), now you cant find'em for less then $17.99/100.

I only know of one around here, its been here oh about 8 years? Kinda high unless you watch the sale ad's. I bought some locking game hoist's with gambrels for $10. Few magazines you cant find anywhere else but thats about it. On occasion they do have a deal or two on guns. They had .17 Marlins for $175 awhile back and the gunshops and wallys had'em for about $200.

From personal experience I'd like to say don't buy the 710. I own one and have shot both the 700 and 770. Both are better guns and in a similar price range, the prices are different for each gun depending on what caliber you get.

Also Marlin has a relatively new bolt action rifle. Its called the Xl7, and i know it comes in at least .270, 25 .06, and 30 .06 . Its got a lot of great features. It's like they took the best features from different guns and manufacturers and put them into one gun. I've checked it out and it feels like a solid reliable gun, but i haven't had the chance to shoot one. It's 299 dollars at one of my local gun stores, and prices vary from place to place.
