Deer Caine

Postby chris lavoie » Fri Jun 18, 2010 11:10 pm

I find that powdered deer caine works great!! I pick sites with clay soil, dig a 5 inch hole that is about 4 square feet. I sprinkle the powder in the hole making sure every inch is covered. After a few rainy days it usually works if set in area with good deer sign. I have trail cam pictures of nice bucks eating the soil. Costs about $9.00 per bag. Any other users of deer caine? I have a couple of sites that are about 2 feet deep now.

never had any luck with it in Fl. or NC. I used Cmere deer in Fl. with little results,But when I used it in NC the deer went nuts for it.I watched 2 big does fight over it.At one point they actually got on there hind legs and was punching each other like a fist fight or boxing. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.Wish I had my video cam then.It was crazy

I have caught on camera, moose and bears in the caine pit. Checked my Cuddy Back yasterday, showed three different bucks in velvet gorging on the clay! Stuff does not work in sandy soil.

Zink, I found that the pit method should be used first, to get the site established. After a few rains the minerals will soak into the soil. After a month then put the caine block in the pit. Sometimes it takes a couple of months to get the caine pit active. I had one site that didn't get active until after I gave up on it. If set up in clay soil and deer around it WILL work.

If deer caine does not work in sandy soil what would everyone suggest for using in sandy soil areas?

If all you have is sandy soil, then that is where the caine block comes in handy. Powder deer caine or ready to use liquid deer caine leeches through the sandy soil very quickly, not giving the deer or the hunter wanting to use the site, any benifit. The block will dissolve very slowly.

If you can only get powder deer caine then pour the contents of the bag into a container of water and it will solidify almost immediately, giving you a caine block. I found this out by trial and error!! The liquid caine that you can buy must be mixed with something more than water.

DEER CANE must be great for attracting deer as I have watched a Timber Wolf HUNTING over a DEER CANE PIT at the same time I was. I saw the wolf standing in the distance staring at a couple of deer that were wallowing in the pit. He stood there for about 5 minutes untill one of the deer wondered a little too far from the others when the wolf started a chase right in front of me. Other times I have seen wolves walking up to a pit to catch fresh scents of deer.

I noticed that bucks are marking their territory around the deer cane pits I have out. Almost all the pits have fresh buck rubs around them. A few of them have scrapes in the vacinity of them. In a couple of weeks I will start baiting at these deer cane sites with rolled oats and whole corn.

Deer cane is on sale for less than $7.00 a bag at Bass Pro in St.Charles Missouri last week. The bags from Bass Pro were good for two sites. Here a bag costs $15.00 for just enough for one site. I heard Fleet Farm has it on sale for less than $6.00 a bag, near Green Bay.

We're in the middle of a drought right now. Powder cane is useless as the ground is bone dry. I must carry water quite aways to activate, as most of my sites are quite far from any road. Some of my canes that have been in exitence for years are doing fine as the deep holes are retainning some moisture. I had to switch to LIQUID DEER CANE (comes pre-mixed) cost is $14.95, which works great in times of droughts.
