I built my first homemade deer feeder for about $20 or so. When deploying a deer feeder, what kind to use really depends on the area you are putting it in. Example: You wouldn't put a big huge $100+ automatic feeder on land where you will not be very often. It is likely to be stolen, plus they stick out like a sore thumb. Homemade feeders like the one I have posted below, I made myself and can be spray painted either black, brown, or cammo, which you can put on or near a deer trail. You also might want to put out a little feed at a time because it may take deer a while to find the corn (or other feed) however if you have an automatic feeder, it will continue to dump feed whether something is eating it or not. With my homemade feeder, only more feed comes out as it is eaten.
Here is the one I made simply by spending about $20-$30 at Home Depot and spending about half an hour to put together/paint.
*Note, drill a few holes in the bottom of the container; big enough to drain water (rain) but not so big as to let a bunch of corn out. The size of the PVC pipe is up to you, either way, refilling is simple. Just fill the container first then just pop off the PVC cap and pour corn down the pipe until it fills up.
