Well I had a Remington 7mm mag,no more.Way to much gun for Ky deer.Expect it pack a walllop when you shoot it,it has kick.Which is why I went back to a 243,just my choice is all.As for loads, well depends on what you are going to use it for and how heavy the cover is ect.And where you will be using it also. Its a good round for deer, elk and godzilla, enjoy it.Doc may be able to help you ammo choice tho.Like I said,I sold mine after about 2 boxes of ammo.
Want my ammo?Ok,stand downrange.

I have a 7mm mag browning a-bolt with the boss. It doesnt kick much at all. I shoot barns tripple shock hand loads out of it. They are seriously accurate and the deer dont take a step. I have killed deer out to 450yds. The only problem I have found is that when skinning the deer there is a bruise or blood clot wherever you hit the deer about the size of a basketball and sometimes larger. They seem to tear the deer up. But hey I dont have to track them. *lol*

I personally have never shot one, but my good friend has one and loves it. He hasnt hunted with it, but does like to plink with it and find good handloads. If you have a little heft to you or have a thick shoulder, you shouldnt mind it. I probably wouldnt suggest it to a youngster as a first gun.
Curiosity killed the cat, but I was a suspect for a while......

i've never shot one but my dad has one and he says he's never killed a deer with it he shot a deer with it at about 60 yards and it went straight through and he never found the deer the blood stopped and he never found it it went through to fast and just didn't kill the deer i guess but i might use one this hunting season if i get a new spot to hunt where i gotta shoot farther and if not i'm stickin with my 270

I shoot a 7mm rem mag, it is a great gun for mule deer, elk and antelope here in the wide open west (Utah/Wyoming/Idaho) where I hunt. I have been using the federal premium nosler ballistic tips with great success, but am thinking of trying out the new federal premium barnes tsx loads that they released this year. Those TSX and MRX are some quality bullets, I just wish I could get the MRX right now. (They don't yet sell them in 7mm rem mag). Shoot these through a Savage Arms with the accutrigger (which is great). Still saving up to get the scope I want to tie the sweet package together.

7mm mag

Postby stacy7070 » Thu Nov 06, 2008 1:13 am

i have a 7mm mag winchester model 70 and i love it. i shoot 175 grain hydro shocks and i don't have to go looking for them. yeah it leaves one heck of a exit wound but it beats your deer running off and you running the chance of loseing them. i tried the remington 150 grain high speed magnums and the deer would not bleed. ive killed deer at like 300yds and dropped them in their tracks with the hydro shocks.

I have a Browning A-Bolt composite stalker in 7mmRemMag and it has some kick but not excessive, the 7mm Rem Magnum is a belted magnum cartridge and all belted magnums have some kick but a heavier rifle or a ported barrel can help absorb some of that recoil so thats a possible reason why some say their's doesn't kick but others say their's does.

If you don't mind some recoil it can be an excellent deer gun but you need to be carefull on the ammo, i've shot a bunch of deer with mine and depending on the ammo if the deer is point blank or its a smallish deer you can have a bullet pass cleanly through but if the shot is around 100yds or farther that same bullet will open up and nock the deer down like its been hit by a lightning strike so if you hunt in deep woods where your shots are short range it's not going to be the best caliber.

Its called a plains rifle by some in that it's tragectory on its bullets are very flat for reaching out there and touching that deer, antelope, Elk, Black Bear out at long distances but that can also make it be a very good pick for hunting in the mountains taking 300-400yd shots off a mountain side. It also puts the bullets out there at a very good velocity so it still has good energy when it hits the animal at long ranges.

If you are a deep woods hunter where your shots are close up 50-75yds then there are better caliber deer rifles than that.

I have 2 7 mags.(both model 700s with blued stainless steel barrels) I run primarily 140-145 grn speer handloads on it, and the kick is much less than my 06 or my 12 gauge for that matter. It is devastating, I have killed animals from 12 yds to 412 paces. You can also run 139 grn interlocks hornady's that work wonderful. It's a great round and both guns I have the most confidence in out of my collection. Not because of the power but because of the accuracy.
It would be the only gun I carried if i didn't do so much still hunting and walking. Any gun it is offered in is just way too heavy and long. There I leave it up to my trust 06 carbine pump :)

The 7mm is a very fine cartridge, advantages are it has fantastic range, tragectory, and termial velocity, 6-700+ yards very possible. For whitetail in most regions its severe overkill. Like everyone else says, short range,,i consider under 150 yds, in my opionion there are much better suited weapons. Short to mid range 0-300, i would highly recommend a 270. I have taken deer out to 360 yards with my 270 and never had a problem
