Does deer get anything from corn?

Postby kens3313 » Sat Oct 15, 2005 8:17 am

I was wondering if deer get anything out of corn. I have heard they dont that it is just like candy for deer. My dad just bought a few acers and he put a bag of corn out and it was gone a few days later so, there must be deer around in the area  . What would be good to maybe plant or something to put out better than corn?

White CLover, that's about the easiest stuff in the world to grow, it's good for the deer, and they love it.

Go to the local Co-op and ask them for whitetail seeds. They will be more than glad to help you and you will get more seeds for the money than you will going thru Biologic or a similar company. Winter wheat, buck forage oats, clover, lespedeza, brassicas, turnips greens, and the list goes on.

Yeah, they get really big from corn! Where do you think the term "corn fed" comes from? All animals that eat corn gain weight pretty quickly. What a animal eats seriously affects what its meat tastes like also. A deer that is in a state where sagebrush is dominant you find that those deer do not taste as good as a corn/soybean/acorn fed deer.

Illinois....Land of Lincoln and a buttload of acorns, corn and soybeans!

I dont think deer get big from corn. They may if they eat a lot of it, but there are better things out there for them than corn. It is mostly an attractant. Corn is only 5-7% protein, compared to the 20-35% from some of the other plants that they can eat, even some of the "weeds" that they eat in the wild. The higher the protein, the bigger the deer are gonna get. I wouldnt put my money in corn as it doesnt benefit the deer enough.

This is true but, I think that dried corn has less protein than fresh corn. :?

It will help add body fat and I personally feel that it is better than nothing. More than just deer eat it also.

And actually remauto1100, I think that the correct phase would be "Cornbread Fed"!

They sure do get alot from corn. They get FAT!!! corn may be low protien, but it is high in calories that will make the venison fat, to the point in good old IL that I dare say I've sen marbling in the meat!

Corn is awesome for deer, and without it- I feel that the meat just doesn't taste nearly as good (having hunted in OR, WA and IL) and it seems the corn areas just get bigger, fatter, tastier venison.

yeah corn is great they do get very fat from it and the meat tastes so much better when they have been eating corn. Also try some stuff they call sweet stuff its grain with some other stuff in it it has molasses on it and is pretty sticky they sell it for horses deer just love it.
