Dry Fire question

Postby jschulz » Sun Aug 02, 2009 5:44 pm

I am extremely new to bow hunting. So new in fact I just bought a Bear Showdown about 2 weeks ago and only shot it about 3 times so far. I am just curious to why dry firing hurts a bow so much? I just curious because I don't know why an arrow would make much of a difference. I have no dry fired my bow yet but I've seen other people do it by accident, I'm trying my hardest to avoid it but I am just curious.

When you dry fire a bow all the force that normally goes into moving the arrow forward doesn't have a place to go so it gets absorbed by the bow, string , cams and the rest of the bow. The string also moves much quicker because it's not pushing an arrow so the force is that much greater. I have seen limbs seperate from a dry fire.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.

I have whitnessed a bow litterally exploding from being dry fired. It puts un-due stress in teh string limbs, limb pockets and so on. You might get away with it once or even twice, but its not a good practive. If you are just drawing your bow, say, in your living room... I suggest puting an arrow in it just in case. Obviously, drawing a bow with an arrow knocked anywhere in your home is not the smartest of ideas.... but if you draw it back even with no intention to fire it, knock an arrow just in case. ruining a $10 arrow is much cheaper than replacing a $500 bow.
I keep hearing this voice in my head that tells me to stay home and clean my guns...
