Electric fence around Deer feeder

Postby texdoug » Mon Sep 06, 2010 7:36 am

I'm having trouble with goats getting into the Deer feeder area. They climb over the fence and push it down. I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not you can put an electric fence anywhere on the feeder fence to keep the goats out and allow the Deer in. I was thinking maybe about half way up the feeder fence or up at the top yet still low enough for the Deer to jump over. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance,

Not sure about your situation but i can tell you this for sure. I keep Alpine goats fenced with electric fence. In the past i have watched deer come to the fence line(i keep it rounded up) to eat accorns that fall under the fence. Easy to get to. When the deer touch that fence with there noses they will get a jolt they will not forget! Usually followed by a loud grunt that you weren't even aware a deer could make. And lastly you will observe the rear end of that deer as it breaks lightspeed headed far away from whatever in the hell that was that just scared the crap out of it never to be seen again. Point is, if the deer get freaked out by the fence you may never see them again. Bucks espeacially. You know they learn alot quicker than those slickheads. I wouldn't try it.

I kind of figured that. I never did put the electric fence up. Thankfully we got some rain and I moved the goats to another pasture.
Appreciate the opinion.
