Europeon deer mount tip & pic

Postby squirrelsniper » Sat Dec 27, 2008 9:42 pm

The past few years I have been experimenting with europeon deer mount with my little bucks that I harvested. Through trial & error or american ingenuity I tried an experiment that TOTALLY worked with this years deer skull. Basically I pulled the hide & as much muscle tissue off from the skull, next I boiled the skull for about 30 minutes & then scraped more muscle off, boiled, scraped & then boiled & scraped again. By the time that 95% of the scraping was done I changed the water for the last time and while the water was boiling I added a littel bit of my wifes powder Oxi-Clean stain remover to the water and let it boil for about 20 more minutes. The results were spectacular & it saved me from buying a boat load of peroxide & the trip to the box store. It also saved me some money. I'll post some pics as soon as aI can figure out how to.

I know what you mean Ironhead. I also have a few other deer skull hanging up outdoors. BTW the total time that it took me from start to finish was approximatly 6 hours. Keep in mind that I am not a professional taxidermist & I took my time with the project + ate supper +took some time out to chit chat.
Anyway, I think that you will really love the results if you use Oxi-clean. I am still marveling at the mount this morning. Image

excellent job, never heard of using the oxi clean before but it could make
a lot of sense since most of the major meat is gone and it can work on the bone of the head.
kudos....

I did my first european mount this year with a small 8. It turned out pretty good. I never bleached it because I kinda liked the natural look. I may try some oxi clean to brighten it up a little.
