i was fortunate and privilaged to be invited on a fallow hunt a few other lads and was luck enough
to take my first fallow stag's ,
after a long drive we settled in by the fire for some lively chat about what was expected in the coming days.
a quick break fast and :coffee: and i packed the camel back for the days hunt ,
later in the morning i spotted a stag that just didnt seem right ,
i discoverd that he had a broken leg and was in very poor condition ,
i snuck up to 30 meters and was about to draw when he trotted off,
hmmm this may not be as easy as i thought
i tracked him in to a small creek and found him at 15 meteres where i hit him behind the ribs with the arrow exiting under his chin for an instant kill
i think you will agree that he was in very poor shape and would be unlikley to survive tha coming winter
i recon i did him a favor
howvever being my first fallow stag i was stoked ,
i reoved his antlers and tied them on to my pack and left him to the foxes, :'(
i really wanted some meat to take home so i went in search of some ,
finally finding some fallow coming out of the forest late evening ,
i spotted a good stag 150 meters away but thought i had no chance as the feeding animals in front of me would spook him ,
as luck would have it i was busted buy the lead fallow doe who barked ,stomped her feet and took the mob back in to the forest .
the stag lifted his head from feeding and seeing that his girls were taking off decided to come and investigate ,he trotted down the game trail towards me
i snuck in front of a small black berry bush and as there was a small dip in front of me i thought id draw the bow as soon as i saw antler tips coming up the rise.
i had ranged the trail where i expected him to come out and though i was all good to go at about 30 meters when he emerged on the other trail at a mere 20 meteres
he was looking in my direction but not seeing me as i had the leaf suit on ,he dipped his head twice to sniff the ground ,this allowed me to draw and as soon as the pins were on him i released ,
i honestly thought i had missed but as he ran off kicking his legs i could see the arrow sticking out of him , :good:
he ran about 90 meters and i saw him fall, i left him till well after dark ,i wandered over with an arrow in the wisker biscuit ready to drill him again but it wasnt neccesary
second ever fallow with the bow and i recon he's and absolute pissa
pictures are a bit rough but i was doing the self timer thingo with a digital on the top of the pack ,
i think in terms of personal hunting achivement this deer rates higher than all the others i have take with the rifle ,
to get in so close and take them with a bow is a great challenge ,one that i set for my self some time ago.
the second stag i got score by a local scorer ,not that it matterd but for intersest sake and he went a toutch over 185 douglas points ,,,,....
bugger that....... who cares i say ,
he's mine
many hours of practice both at home and up at jindera on the archery range with rossy and the lads paid off in the end ,
im still smiling .
