I personally swear by .270 Winchester XP2 in 130 or 140. On a side note,,,i did get a new rifle and SURPRISE FELLAS,,its NOT a Ruger LOL. I picked up a Browning A-Bolt Medallion,,,but YES it is still a .270 lol. I sold the .300 Win Mag and passed the Ruger .270 to my son,,left me high and dry with an itchy trigger finger.

I use Hornady 130gr. SST's in my .270WSM and love them. These are reloads that I use.

30-06 150 grain Winchester PowerMax. One nasty bullet. I shoot an old Remington Woodsmaster 742 semi-auto rifle. At 100 yards I can put 3 bullets inside a 2 inch circle and I only lay the gun across my window seal, no benchrest. There is no question when you hit a deer with this ammo. I've been using this ammo for 2 years now and my dad is hooked on it now. I see no sense in paying $40 - $50 per box of 20 bullets when you are free handing because you will never be as accurate as your gun. These are accurate and devastating. But, I would also note that not every gun shoots ammo the same. My gun and my dad's gun shoot these bullets wonderful, but his will not shoot Winchester Powerpoints at all. Mine will not shoot Core Lokt. You just need to play around with ammo types and weights. But, the PowerMax is definitely worth trying out. Just don't hit the deer in the meat. He is still going to go down in his tracks, but you won't be salvaging that meat.

If its for deer and only deer I'd have to put my vote in for the 7mm-08. More than enough power past 300 yards for any deer here in mn.

I agree with 24/7 hunt , the Winchester power Max amino is extremely reliable and puts em down fast and cheap! I use 150 grainers in my supergrade m70 300 win mag.
