Feeding Muleys in the Winter

Postby Henry » Wed Dec 31, 2003 9:18 am

Well we're looking at a lot of snow in my area, and the elk are already moving in with the muleys. I'm thinking about starting a feed program for the muleys in our areas. I know it's a common practice in other parts of the state, and in other states as well, and I've heard they do quite well.

I consider myself a newbie to this, so anything anyone can offer before I begin (or whether to begin at all) would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year!

I know some landowners who are feeding successfully. They feed all year long however, and try to maintain a consistent pattern and allow the animals to not completely rely on the food.

Monitor your local food sources for the right feed.

Good luck.

I suggest contacting a local biologist. Considering they do it for a living, they're aware of a lot of oversites you may not think of.

I wish you luck in your project. I wish I had land of my own to manage, and I would probably do the same as you if I did.

Henry, just curious if you ever got into it and how it's going?

Hey,
I live in Idaho and our family feed deer in the winter. It's the fish and games responsibility, but they don't seem to do their job. My dad has "private wild game feeding"- It takes donations and he puts it towards feeding the deer and elk in the harsh winters. He talked to some nutritionists and they came up with a block, It is the shape of a salt block, but it provides the game with nutrients that help them survive. Don't get me wrong I like whitetails, but it is a fact that they are way more adaptable than muleys and they don't take as much attention. The muleys are bigger and the don't adapt as well. The whitetails are pushing them out of our country. The fish and game love whitetails because they don't take as much management as the muleys. I wish the whitetails would stay back east!! They taste fine, but I don't really like change and there just isn't enough muleys.
