Fence sitters

Postby tbonecpa » Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:45 pm

I have a problem with the neighbors that have three ladder stands right on the property line facing into my lease. They are ignoring the no tresspass signs and I am getting irritated. What would be your plan of action?

1) Tell them to turn their stands myself
2) Let the warden deal with them directly
3) Hang tarps on my side of the fence right in front of their ladders so they cant see towards my lease(I really like this one)
4) Set up stands 3 ft on my side of the fence to make a point

maybe they faced them the opposite way that the deer they are hunting are coming from. This way they can hide behind the tree and get away with a little movement. There are a lot of factors hear that i dont know to say if this is right or wrong.I had a lease for almost 10 years. It was 200 acres but the only woods was a 100 yd head row that made a horseshoe around the field.Problem was the property line went right down the middle. When we hung our stands we took notice to the stands on the other 3 bordering farms and tried our best to give them thier space.AS the other farms changed hunters over the years some of them werent so respectfull about it and i would often find my self 50-60 yds from another hunter. They had just as much right to be there as i did so i couldnt say much. Finally i just walked away from the lease.I guess what im saying is if your situation is similar to mine than you cant really get to upset with them. Now if they have plenty of other property thats huntable and are just trying to shoot over on your property its a whole nother story.

If the animal dies in your lease, do you have to give them access?? There was a hunter hunting the edges of my boundries, he shot a nice 10 point and it ran into the heart of my property. I would not give him access to retreive the deer. He knew it would run onto my land before he set up his stand. The co's cofiscated it.

I hunt a private farm and my stand is set up right on the property edge facing into a neighbouring corn field. I have it set up this way not to shoot over the property line but to hide behind the tree. Also if the stand is set up for bow hunting it probably doesn't face the direction the archer intends to shoot. I set my stands perpendicular to my main shooting lanes so that I can shoot from sitting without having to move if I get surprised. I would say any deer shot on his side of the fence is his regardless of where it runs to die. Would you want to retrieve a deer you shot that ran over to his side of the fence? If his property is un-huntable then it's a different story. You could try talking to them about it but if they are difficult instead of wasting stands just lay out some hand wipes, dryer sheets and the like which will stink up the area with human sent. You could also make a cheap scarecrow (deer) that I am sure they would take pot shots at or damage and then you've won!

you guys are way too nice. I'd go take a big poop right near their stands but where they couldn't see it. I'm pretty sure no deer would go around there!

If they were set up even 30 yds off the line I would be more understanding but I could literally step from my property to their ladder with out setting foot on their land. I have woods, they have open land. That is the sole reason for their positioning and there is no way they are getting permission to retieve a wounded animal that died on my property because of it. I haven't bothered contaminaiting there stands because with a gun they are reaching 100 yds plus into my proerty anyway. The predominate wind direction could cause that to backfire on me as well. Anyway, I have found the owners name but can't find a phone number. There is a youth hunt this weekend and I am taking my three sons so we may run into them. I am just not very excited about contfronting a stranger with a gun when my boys are present. Should be a non-issue but the world is full of crazies. If that goes no where the tarps are going up. If those get removed, the warden can take care of it.

That sucks. I don't envy your position. Good luck.

Lots of if's, and's, buts, here. We let most neighbors onto our properties to retreive deer but by law we dont have to and it becomes our deer. Few outfitters arent allowed across the fence as they made sure we understood we couldnt retrieve any of our deer. We've got neighbors we even gut the deer before they can call and come over. They do the same for us sometimes too. Nice when neighbors/hunters can do things like that. Alot depends on the law/regulations where your at. Trust me you dont want to start a "urinating" contest. I'd try talking to them about just hunting in general at first and lead the conversation into the stand placement issue. If theyre nice guys it might end up being beneficial to both groups as we've had that happen. Organize quasi drives using both properties, tracking wounded deer and getting help tracking and removing deer from the timber. If theyre not so nice guys>>>COYOTE URINE! Works every time guys. Around $20 gallon from trapper supplys and deer run from it. Better then anything Ive ever found in 35 years of deer hunting for shutting down stands, posts, blinds, deer trails, too numerous deer trails, blocking deer into your stand/blind etc. Dont use it to ruin someones hunt unless they truly deserve it. Sometimes it helps to put yourself in their shoes but if all else fails, yote'em. Gallon will last you a long time too as one ounce is all you'll need at the most to ruin a spot for several weeks minimum.
