First archery deer

Postby vmthtr » Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:26 pm

Got serious about bow hunting this year and put in about 18 sits so far. Saturday night was the night. 1 hour before dark I hit the grunt call and had a deer make a beeline across a field to the edge of the woods I am in. Lost sight and no movement for 3 minutes or so, hit the grunt call again and he started running back and forth in the field looking I guess for a way to jump cattle fence into woods. He came in from behind my left shoulder and I was kicking myself for not standing when he was in the field. He looked up at me and I was hunched down next to the tree, if standing maybe would have spooked. He came in 5 more steps where I could get a shot and looked back toward the field. I drew and shot. As he ran away I could see the Luminok sticking out his shoulder about 4 inches. I was shaking so bad I had to wait 20 minutes to climb down, was afraid I would fall out of my stand. He went 40 yards and piled up. Double lung shot, picture perfect, except for no pass through. I use a 60# Guardian Bowtech, 100g Rocky Snypers, Maxima 250 arrows. Here is a pic.

Congrats.Nice job on the patience.18 sits is a lota of time to put in and not kill a deer. unless its by choice.Either way way to stick with it.

I saw deer just not close enough for a "for sure" shot, so I didn't shoot. 40 yards is my max, although I practice to 60.

Very nice! Impressive shot for your first archery kill. Good job for sticking with it too. Hope I have the same luck as you this weekend. 8)

Seasons almost here!! for all you guys out there looking for your first buck with your bow.... GOOD LUCK!! And to the guy who said sitting 18 nights without shooting a buck with his bow is a long time...stop hunting in pens. those of us who hunt the wild know that 18 nights without getting a shot at a buck is not a long time at all!

iv been hunting for 10 years all together. I went the first 4 years without getting a deer. Sense then i have got at least one every year with a shot gun. I have been bow hunting seriously for 5 years now and still havnt shot. Its tough but doesnt even make me thinking about quiting. 18 sits is nothing. ill sit 18 sitts in the first 9 days of the season.(morning and afternoon). havnt worked up to the all day sit yet. congrats man and lets get ready for this years season boys.

see!! thats a TRUE hunter right there. one that sits and sits and never gives up. anyone who says bow hunting is "easy" still hunts from a closed in stand with a high powered rifle 200yds from the deer where noise, movement, scent, stand placement, concealment arent even issues. EVERYTHING comes into play when your in the deers living room. anyone can shoot from the neighbors house!! hahaha

i used to think the same thing about rifle hunting. you can see one of my previous posts. i no longer feel like rifle hunting is easy. or that anyone can do it. iv done a little and spent some time with some guys who have done a lot of rifle hunting and its not like it looks in a video. i will still say that bow hunting is more challenging then rifle hunting. strictly my opinion. based on my own experiences. but its not easy to go out and shoot deer. if it is in any way your one of only a few who have it that easy.

Nice deer and awedsome first buck, congrats. I bowhunted from '75 to '79 before I got one, fawn doe. Any gunhunting is inherently easier then archery hunting but has its own problems/complications too. I killed my first archery deer 31 years ago fall of 1979 with a Bear 76'er Take Down Recurve. I hunted mainly with wood or fiberglass arrows. I love how now days the different "camps" dislike anyone using a different legal method. We hated compound users. Called them little boys with training wheels. I never hunted with a compound until 1993. Now its the compound/vertical bow users condemning crossbows or gun hunters, gunhunters condemning archers for long seasons and spooking all the deer away. Some people need to grow up and realize we all stand together or we all fall together. Just a little FYI most states DNR's set up the deer hunting and deer etc population control for gunhunters. Until just a few years ago most states DNR's considered archery hunting a novelty and didnt take it seriously.
